Glue Ear - ENT-Grommets

Hi,

My two year old has been diagnosed with glue ear and hearing loss - which is affecting speech resulting in a significant delay.

Just wondering if anyone could share their experiences of private grommet surgery?

Thanks

I don’t know much about the details but my GD was virtually deaf at the age of 3 before she was diagnosed with glue ear. Grommets were fitted privately at a Central London hospital and she quickly began to recover her hearing. I hope your two year old has the same results.

Mine had hers done at 6 in a private north London hospital- had her adenoids removed at the same time. It was all very straightforward, no overnight, she was fine & instant improvement in her hearing. Well worth it

We were in exactly this position.

We were on the NHS waiting list during covid and went private as the effect on her speech was getting to be too much.

Her hearing improved immediately and she had a little adjustment time where she relearned what she was hearing. Her speech came on really quite quickly.

She had two sessions of SaLT on NHS but was signed off. She now sees a private SaLT who is amazing! She is almost caught up with her peers now - just working on v, g and c at the moment.

I would wholeheartedly recommend doing this as it was life changing for my daughter. She had grommets inserted and adenoids removed. It was day surgery and was absolutely five. The anaesthetic caused a little upset but nothing that would put me off having it done with my other daughter if she needed it!

Best thing we ever did for DS at 2y8m.

Same here. We noticed that when my DS started to speak, words like ‘cucumber’ or ‘aeroplane’ were sounding the same. This went on for ages. He was an early talker and my gut knew something was off. He had bad glue ear and we had to wait until he was 2 years old to get it done. Three days after grommets he was talking normally and like a different child.

Thanks for all your replies.

We had a private hearing test which confirmed the glue ear and hearing loss.

We have been refused SALT on the NHS and would really like to get treatment sorted ASAP so that his speech development doesn't fall any further behind. Plan would be to begin private SALT sessions after grommets have been fitted.

I've been advised that I may struggle to get an ENT to operate privately on a child under the age of 3. Would anyone who has had this done mind PMing me details of who you used ?

Ds had grommets at 20 months, 3.6yo and 6yo all done through the NHS though.
Once he'd had the initial appointment, all were done quickly-the second was done within the week of deciding he needed another set.

My little boy (3) had grommets fitted last November and they've just came out.
Before the grommets he had significant hearing loss. He had to wear a Baha hearing aid . He has no speech at all.

He had the grommets fitted and some
Complications. But after a couple of months things settled . He was a bit scared at first of all
These new noises and sounds he was heading but he thrived !!! His speech now is fantastic and we are all
Thrilled how much he's developed since the grommets Flowers

We had the choice between grommets and hearing aids, we went down the hearing aid route (that was what was recommended at the time). She is nearly 9 and now and hearing is now within normal range. They told me once her teeth started to fall out we would start to notice a different... sure enough we did! It is strange watching old videos back to hear how she would speak. She is now thriving at school and her speech is completely normal (although some of the names she have things have stuck as a family). It was very emotional the first time she put her hearing aids in and we realised how poor her hearing was.
