Daughter sore eye & fever

My 2.5 year old DD has what I and the doctor think is conjunctivitis. It started on Tuesday and has gradually gotten worse over the past few days. I will attach a picture.

On Wednesday I took her to the pharmacy and they gave me some eye drops for her (Optrex). They advised if it didn't improve within 2 days to call her GP. She was otherwise fine in herself except for a slight cold so on Thursday she went to nursery as normal (I rang them to check I was ok to bring her in). I then got a phone call from them around 2pm to say she had developed a temperature of 38.4 and that I needed to collect her. I gave her calpol when we got home and her temperature went down. She seemed ok(ish), she was still wanting to play with her toys but wasn't eating much.

Then on Friday (I was expecting to see an improvement with her eyes by now as it was day 2 of the drops) no improvement whatsoever.

So I took her to the GP and they said to try some different eye drops and but didn't mention her fever or if it had anything to do with her eye or if it was just a coincidence. But he did say to look out for swelling because if there is swelling around the eye then she needs to go to A&E to be put on IV antibioticsSad

Onto today - her eye is still the same, no improvement whatsoever and she still has a fever of 38 which does come down with calpol/nurofen. She's very snotty and just generally not herself.

She's drinking and snacking but I guess the reason for this post is that I'm concerned that it's day 3 of a high temp and no improvement of her eye. Does she just have a bug that's going round and it's a coincident she has conjunctivitis with it or do the two generally come hand in hand and when one goes the other will too? And why aren't the eye drops working?

Also, how long does/should a fever typically last and when should I be concerned and call 111?

Sorry for the long post - just a really worried mum right now.

Hi OP. I would take her to out of hours and ask them to check her for periorbital cellulitis. That’s the only ‘serious’ thing it could be as far as I’m aware (DD had a mystery eye infection not that long ago so I spent a lot of time googling! I’m not a medical expert though). It probably isn’t but it can get very serious so definitely worth checking and not leaving it til the morning so give 111 a call. 💐

They aren’t working as it’s viral. There’s a link between the eye and the nose and infections travel up it.
it’s nothing to worry about too much just a viral conjunctivitis and should clear in a couple of weeks max - although her eye might feel a little bit dry for a bit longer.

Seek advise if you see a white spot on the eye, if she starts getting sensitive to light, her pupil becomes smaller or less reactive or her vision becomes blurred.

@Cuppasoupmonster periorbital means around the orbit so the lids would be swollen by definition.

Thanks for your responses. Flowers

I've rang 111 this morning for their advice. I think it's viral too. That's the only explanation for why the drops aren't working. I've been doing some research too and her symptoms correlate more with viral conjunctivitis than bacterial. But I just want confirmation from the doctor to stop with the eye drops before I do as I know stopping antibiotics mid way through a course can be bad.

Her eye looks so sore Sad
