Newborn in pain and has green poo

I'm worried that my 3-week-old son has some sort of gastrointestinal problem.

For the last five days or so he's basically been crying nonstop whenever he's awake. Hours at a time. It seems mostly like infant dyschezia because he's often grunting and straining. He does poos but just a few minutes afterwards he is in discomfort again.

Now, his poos have just turned green. Previously, they were yellow / pale brown.

He's pretty much exclusively breastfed.

I had two courses of antibiotics while pregnant, two more since he's been born, and he had to have a course at birth too. I'm worried all those antibiotics may have messed with his microbiome.

He just seems to be in so much discomfort all the time, and now that his poos are green it seems even more likely that something is wrong. I really hate it and don't know what to do.

Yes ring 111
It could be alot of different things, may be worth researching cmpa too as it can effect even through your breast milk. But best to speak to health visitor/111/GP if your concerned at all

CMPA
Had this with DS at this age and he is still very sensitive to dairy

Thank you, I've called 111 and I'm waiting for the GP to ring back.

I'll also try cutting out dairy! I do eat a lot of cheese 😬

Sounds very very similar to DS who had a lactose intolerance. The GP said the green poo was particularly a sign of a dairy/lactose intolerance but he was FF so it was easy to try a LF formula. It might be worth cutting dairy out, bear in mind it’s 2-3 weeks before it clears your system entirely so there’s no trace in your milk. Definitely see what 111 say but if you’re getting plenty of wet and dirty nappies I suspect they won’t do a great deal other than tell you to cut out dairy.

I am sending loads of sympathy your way, we had 5 months of absolute hell before someone suggested trying LF formula. Non stop screaming and discomfort. Poor wee babies! Hope it passes soon

I spoke to 111 and we ended up taking him in - they did lots of checks and they reckon all the antibiotics might have upset him. He's discharged for now and we're just keeping an eye on it. I hope it gets better soon. The nurse said it was ok to keep on eating dairy.
