How many times have your kids had chicken pox?

So, I'm in disbelief. Currently all three of my kids have chicken pox. I'm a single mum trying to wfh with kids that can't go out or go to school/nursery. Which is what you have to do when your kids have chicken pox BUT they have all previously had it! My youngest (4yo) only had last December, middle child (8yo) had it when he was about 1, can't remember if he was under 1 and when he had it my eldest got it for the 2nd time, she was 2 at the time and I get her getting it again then as she was about 6m the first time she had it but this makes it the 3rd time my she has had it!! I did phone GP surgery as I was in disbelief and they said new research says you can get it more than once but I'm still in disbelief that I've had 7 cases of chicken pox with 3 kids!!

very rare for people to get it more than once but possible, even more unusual for all of your kids to have had it more than once though. Perhaps it’s been misdiagnosed, could it maybe be hand foot and mouth?

Stressedamerican · 04/10/2022 20:58

I thought you could only get it once and breathed a sigh of relief when mine got it out of the way! I’ve never known anyone get it twice. That must be so horrible for you all.

Rutland2022 · 04/10/2022 21:01

None, we vaccinated against it as it’s a massive pain in the arse! Bit late for you though @Lc22

DayToNight · 04/10/2022 21:01

My DS had it twice, only a handful of spots each time.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/10/2022 21:02

DD had it twice a few weeks apart. The GP said it was very unusual - was clearly two different bouts and she’d been better in between - but not impossible. She was 18 months old and the second lot was worse than the first.

I’ve never known anyone else to have it twice and you’ve had incredibly bad luck, you poor thing. Sending strength.

PrunellaMcTat · 04/10/2022 21:05

Eldest had it aged 1 and aged 10. Milder second time but no mistaking it.
Middle was vaccinated.

Youngest had it once (so far!).

ShowOfHands · 04/10/2022 21:08

DH had it as a child and then again when DD was a toddler, then 4yrs later when DS was a toddler. Then a few years later, he had meningitis and the lumbar puncture showed it was caused by chicken pox. He had no spots.

He gets it worse each time and I live in fear of him getting it again.

Autumnhasarrived2022 · 04/10/2022 21:12

I’ve had it twice was really ill both times

CaptainBarbosa · 04/10/2022 21:14

Once when he was about 18months-2years old.

He's been in contact with a few cases since but never picked it up. He had quite the infection on his though, covered in pox, so maybe he got a good dose and a good immunity from it maybe.

I've only had it once, once as a child and never again, despite also having been in contact with the virus a few times.

Doublechins · 04/10/2022 21:19

Eldest 3 have all only had it once but youngest has had it 3 times!

BarnacleNora · 04/10/2022 21:20

Youngest had it mildly at 8 months. I thought it was mild because he was still mostly breastfed (he didn't really take to solid food until 8.5 months so was still just gumming on bits of toast and banana at that point). Thought great, job done, one of them out the way. Then he got it horrendously at 3 years old after it did the rounds at nursery and now has a couple of scars.

My oldest never got it. Never got it when his brother got it both times, skipped it when it went round his pre school (every time it went round his pre school), did his entire first year of school and managed to skip it, just would NOT catch it! So I stumped up for the vaccination for him after his brother went through his really bad case. My oldest is autistic and has weird reactions to pain, sensory defensiveness etc and I really didn't want him to scratch his beautiful face raw. His wonderful gp was brilliant and referred him for bloods first to ensure he definitely hadn't had it and then I booked the vaccination through Boots. No regrets and I wish I'd vaccinated my youngest but as I say I thought he was done at 8 months!

Beees · 04/10/2022 21:25

I've had it 3 times and I've also had shingles it's not as uncommon as most would believe to have it multiple times. Seems rotten luck all 3 of yours have had it more than once though.

HumphreysCorner · 04/10/2022 21:25

All 3 of mine had it twice x

dementedpixie · 04/10/2022 21:44

2 kids have had it once each
Ds had shingles age 3 (had CP at 6 months old)

Kite22 · 04/10/2022 22:15

Once each.
I thought it was very unusual to get it more than once, hence people being almost pleased when their dc got it and were 'getting it out of the way'.

Blanketpolicy · 04/10/2022 22:22

I've know of a couple of adults who cannot build immunity to it for some reason, one was a staff member at ds's nursery! She said she had had it around 7 times 😱

I have heard if they catch it very young sometimes they dont build immunity the first time, but not sure if the science backs that up.

Lc22 · 05/10/2022 21:23

Thanks for the replies. Would appear it's sort of normal

Much love you, that must be so scary for you. Hopefully he's had it for the last time

Feel you for the autism, my middle child is but luckily non of them feel poorly with it so he's fine. maybe the BF thing has something to do with it as first time my eldest two had it they were BF so could explain 2nd time? Who knows?

Poor you, that's so unfortunate. I'm really lucky none of mine are actually ill with it this time

My DC have only had it once each, but I remember my brother having it a second time and my Mum being surprised.

Hopefully your DC are done after this bout OP. My DH never caught it at all in his childhood or early adulthood despite being in direct contact with infected people, but he went down with it in his early 40s and it was horrendous.

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 05/10/2022 21:39

5 times my daughter had it. Each time a reducing number.... I was demented but they were diagnosed each time. She does have immune issues. They can get it as often as it takes until they get an immunity to it. It's sucks though

cazinge · 05/10/2022 21:40

DS had it at around 18mo then again at 3.5 but midly. DD caught it from DS (2nd time) and had it very badly and is scarred, you couldn't see any normal skin between the spots on her torso. Hoping she has built some good immunity from having it that badly poor thing. I would vaccinate if I was having any more DC.

bluesky45 · 05/10/2022 21:44

Kids have had it once but I've had it twice, both times as a kid. Apparently it wasn't very bad the first time so maybe I didn't get any immunity

Coffeesnob11 · 05/10/2022 21:45

Dc had it at 1 (seen by a doctor for something else and confirmed) and again recently at 4 and he was really poorly. Infected triple spot on his finger required really strong antibiotics. I am praying that's it now.
