My son is almost 5 but I've noticed he has terrible bruising on his legs. I'm not sure if this is normal or not? He had a bath last night and he's got loads! All down his shins . Trying g to get a doctors appointment just in case but can't get through. 😕

I remember being told that children will bruise on boney areas (my children are covered in them as they are so rough and tumble!). If it is bruising on fleshy areas with no reason, then, yes, i would be concerned. Likewise, if the bruises do not blanch (petechial rashes) then again I would go to the GP (or A&E if he was unwell with the bruising).

So tonight he said that someone pushed him and punched his legs. I'm now a bit worried but can't get alot out of him as he's not great at knowing the timescales of things or explaining himself. How would you approach this? 🤔

My 5 year old looks exactly the same. Always got shins covered in bruises.

I was told if it’s boney bits it’s normal to have bruises, it’s if they develop bruising on the soft bits you need to worry. Shins completely normal, somewhere like thighs not so much,

HappyHamsters · 04/10/2022 19:02

Are the new red ones bruises too or bites

Lcw29 · 04/10/2022 19:41

They are bruises too. His legs are sore poor thing. 😢

I would say that is normal - my DCs have shins that look like that! Is he well in himself? I know what you mean about DCs and facts giving - they have no concept of time and the cause of injuries could be due to aliens for all they know!

Does he have bruising elsewhere or mainly shins? To me, the look like normal childhood bruising

Lcw29 · 05/10/2022 06:31

It is only his shins yes. The alien comment made me laugh! Haha

Both my DC had loads of bruises on their shins till they were about 6! Not sure why but they don't anymore

They look like normal legs for a kid.
Mine were covered in those shin/knee bruises and they never knew how they happened.
They were normally from climbing on things or knocking with a scooter, sometimes crawling arkund on the floor.

I wouldn't be worried about little bruises on shins, knees, elbows as these are normal easy places for kids to bump while playing. They probably won't even hurt unless he pokes them.
I would question bruises on the torso, neck, inner side of thigh upper arm etc- places that it would be unusual to injure accidentally.

Does he play football at school?

Lcw29 · 05/10/2022 07:53

@reallyworriedjobhunter not so much football but he does climb alot. And go on the bikes. He is a very active boy! Lol

If you are even worried pop and see your GP.

outtheshowernow · 05/10/2022 07:55

Have you done the glass test

LottieTx · 05/10/2022 07:55

Honestly they look normal to me. I have a very active now 8 year old and her legs are constantly covered in bruises - she does football, dodgeball, cartwheels etc and she’s always got bruised up and down her legs.
