Cradle cap on nearly 2 year old.

DD still has cradle cap on the front/top of her scalp. Anyone successfully got rid of it using any at home remedies? Currently washing her hair every other day. During which i massage the scalp for 5/10 minutes to try and free up any loose bits. As her hair gets longer (currently past her shoulders) it's getting harder to massage as it makes it knotty. Any advice gratefully received!

Have you tried dentinox?

FizzyFucker · 29/09/2022 19:12

I used head and shoulders (carefully, so it didn't get in their eyes) on both my children and it got rid of the cradle cap.
I had previously tried various oils (coconut, almond etc) but none of them did a damn thing.

My two year still has cradle cap as does my 5 year old. Nothing really works to shift it but it does decrease as they get older.

Our health visitor told us to use olive oil and a comb, I used a small beard comb. Worked perfectly and never came back

I accidentally shifted my 11mo's stubborn cradle cap when I was soothing her chicken pox by putting oats in the bath. Old sock full of oats, tie it up and put in bath water. Squeeze it over them and a really silky oat liquid comes out. We massaged her head with it and the cradle cap vanished within days and hasn't come back! Way more effective than all the various scalp oils we tried.

Head & Shoulders sorted DS'. I did wait until he was just about to start primary. Nothing else had ever shifted it and, if any of it did come off, clumps of hair came out too and he was becoming aware of that.

Op i used olive oil. Let it stay on for a bit then it becomes soft and comb over it. It will come off

anotherscroller · 29/09/2022 19:32

I did the olive oil and nit comb and it worked. I confess I did pick a few stubborn bits off with my nails.

basilmint · 29/09/2022 19:32

No solutions but my DD had some until nearly 4. Nothing shifted it but it eventually disappeared on its own.

Florin · 29/09/2022 19:35

We tried the cradle cap shampoo which didn’t shift it at all and then did it with head and shoulders and really massaged it in then I sat him on the floor while I sat on the sofa and very gently combed it all through with a nit comb, it worked brilliantly.

Olive oil soak. The longer it can stay in the better. Several hours is ideal. Play outside on a cloudy day if your kid tends to rub their head on things. then set up with some tv time and get to descaling. Then wash out. It’s the only way if it’s really bad and you are trying to delay medicated shampoo

once we started using a dandruff shampoo it went away.

saywhatwhatnow · 29/09/2022 19:44

Yeah I second using head & shoulders, massage it in well and let it sit. Then comb it through in the bath with a nit comb and rinse it out. Then I would cover the whole area in coconut oil (nicer smelling than olive oil) and sit them in front of you and gently comb it all out again. It should come off very easily, some hair will come off too. You might have to repeat this process a couple of time but it does work (if they cooperate).

Head and shoulders, used on a 4 and 2yo when nithing else worked, used it once a week for a month and it hasnt come back yet!

keeprunningupthathill · 29/09/2022 19:46

My three year old still has a bit and I like to pick it off when he's asleep...should really try harder to shift it but dentinox and head and shoulders haven't done it.

Starburst8 · 29/09/2022 20:01

My 3 year old had it and it was awful to get rid of, I tried everything. In the end I used child Farm shampoo and a baby brush (super soft bristles) and combed his hair whilst shampooing. It ended up flaking out. He still gets the odd spot now but when his hair/scalp gets washed it comes clean again.

lavenderfine · 29/09/2022 20:04

Coconut oil on the hair for 30 mins/ 1 hour, then comb gently, wash with baby shampoo and comb again

bigbeautifulmonster · 29/09/2022 20:05

This is such a great thread with great suggestions which I'll try with my 4.5yo!

DaisyChainsForever · 29/09/2022 20:10

Wow, wasn't expecting so many answers, thank you everyone!

Was going to start a similar thread today as my 3 year old has it bad too...
So many great suggestions here.
I'm going to start with the oat soak and go from there

purplethings · 29/09/2022 21:32

Use a nit comb to gently lift the flakes of the scalp.

bogoblin · 29/09/2022 21:35

I confess, while we watch TV I lightly scratch my 2 year old's scalp to get the flakes off. I can usually get one or two before he notices and protests. Not the best idea though 😂
