Been to A & E but still worried 😟

Dd is 4 1/2, she's had 3 colds so far this month. Nothing concerning until yesterday when she just seemed to need a lie down, she's had a cough the last 3 days. Checked her temp and it was 39.5. Gave calpol, did nothing and it went up to 39.7. Gave ibuprofen and that brought temp down to 38.

Called 111 and they said either get her checked then or in morning but gp was happy nothing too concerning.
Her temp was up and down through the night.

6am it was 40.7 so rang 111 back and the paramedic said A&E. Dr ruled out ear, throat, chest and urine infection. Said viral but did say her heart rate was elevated. When they took her temp at the hospital it was 37.5 but that was under arm and she was wriggling so not sure how accurate it was. Our thermometer is a braun in ear one, it's reading me as 36.6, dh 36.6 and ds 37 so I don't think it's faulty.

I'm just concerned that she had calpol at 11am, her temp is 40.7 again now and she can't have more ibuprofen til tea time.

Counting heart beats I'd say it's between 130-140 bpm, breaths are 30p/m, she's lost her appetite today since getting back and is sleeping. She was up late last night and up through the night though. She is drinking and weeing. I'm obviously worried about her but I'm not sure if this is normal for a bad virus.

We had covid in July so doubtful it'll be that. She did have a flu spray on Tuesday but it seems a bit delayed/extreme for that

If her temp is over 40 I'd be taking her back myself. Have you got one of them oxyometer things ? My ds used to have febrile seizures when his temp hit 40

Alohaoi · 25/09/2022 12:51

Yeah but it's not a kids one.

I know, she's asleep again so I'll see what she's like when she wakes up

Also keep an eye on if she is completely refusing food especially drink.

I know how you feel we've been there with our kids years ago and now our grandchildren and we felt fobbed of and one was rude. We are always polite etc and wanted to ask questions like any decent parent/grandparents

So if you feel all is still not well, take her back.

Wishing your DD a very speedy recovery

Btw, our grandchild is slightly older than you used to and still has cold after cold etc as I think we kept hi too safe and away from nursery and extra clean - so some children do get more sick than others for no reason - take care

It's the rise in temperature that causes febrile convulsions not the actual temperature.

What would worry me is that the calpol doesn't seem to be bringing the temperature down. That would be what makes me think it would be a good idea to have her seen.

How is she in herself? You say she's drinking okay? Is she waking up properly? One of mine used to hit over 41 and would still be running round playing happily, another would crash at anything over 38.5. If she's at all floppy then definitely take her in.

She fell asleep at 10 this morning, then woke up for an hour at 2.15 and is now back to sleep. She just seems exhausted. I'm going to give another hour to give her some ibuprofen to see if it will perk her up.

I know I agree, it was the same last night. Calpol didn't touch it but the ibuprofen did. She's just maxed out at the number of doses she can have in 24 hours

Just checked her temp again and it's 39.6 so it's come down a degree.

Thank you for your replies too.

It still could be covid even if she had it a few months ago. If they're drinking plenty I probably wouldn't be too worried.

But if you are worried then go back.

quirkyquerty · 25/09/2022 15:37

Go back if you're worried- hope she feels better soon

This gives you good advice on what to look out for:

Poor little mite. Was she checked for Covid? I had it twice in 2 months & triple vaccinated so it's possible. Have you got a lateral flow/rapid antigen test to check? Hope she picks up.

We was always told at the hospital that ibuprofen is better for temperatures over calpol, and in our case it's always been right

GoodStuffAnnie · 25/09/2022 16:55

Me too. Ibuprofen always better for temps.

Im sure she will be better quickly, but don’t sit at home and worry. Just take her in.

workiskillingme · 25/09/2022 16:58

Sounds like pretty standard viral symptoms to me. If she's aware of her surroundings drinking passing urine and not struggling to breathe I wouldn't be too concerned if any of that changes definitely contact a&e

User34352515 · 25/09/2022 17:04

DD’s only symptom of covid was a high temp that didn’t come down with meds. We know lots of small kids getting it twice within months.
