Constantly ill/school/asthma?

Shellyxx · 15/09/2022 21:21

So my 4.5 year old spent a week in hospital on oxygen back a good 6 months ago..
we're going through a possible diagnosis of asthma/another lung cond.

Last school year, she spent more than half of it at home.. chesty cough, lower oxygen ect. It was CONSTANT.

anyway, she spent months off school and the summer holidays, on trains, parks full of kids, soft play full of kids, restaurants, pubs, everywhere... out and about! Not one chesty cough?

She's been at school 4 days and bam chesty cough again?

Anyone else experience this?

Could it be an allergy to something at school ?

It also comes with a high temp, runny nose, ect so I'm not sure?

This is exactly the same as my dd. She was rushed in hospital a while back not being able to breathe properly and low oxygen and was diagnosed with possible asthma. Everytime she gets sick she's really ill with it and this means time off school. I got 3 letters off the school, my second arrived a week after she came home from hospital because she had a week off whilst she was In hospital. I'm currently trying to get a diagnosis from the doctor to no joy yet. The school wint put her on any asthma plan as shes nit got a diagnosis. She's completely fine in the school holidays but the minute she goes back...bang she's ill again. Its awful. I try my best to get her in school as often as possible but unfortunately it's not always possible

It's really awful isn't it?! My daughter loves school and one minute she's going, and the next she's off for a week or more. I'm really frustrated with it, and it's awful seeing her like it all the time. What have the drs said about your DD?

It really is awful. My doctor said its really hard to fully diagnose a child with asthma, and it's just a matter of watchful waiting and continue with the inhalers. The school have said without a diagnosis she can't be put on the asthma register so isn't getting the same support as those with a diagnosis. The inhalers have helped massively with the cough at night so I'm sure it is asthma. Have you spoken to the doctor?

She's under a asthma peads dr as she also had a haze on her lung and they questioned a long term lung condition but this dr said he's sure it's not that and is asthma BUT she had a repeat X-ray about 3 weeks ago and every time I call for the results no one can give me them. We have a follow up appt in 9 weeks at the hospital. I'm keeping a diary of whenever she gets a cough like this from school. I'm gonna call the regular dr today too so he has it noted and maybe he will see her. She's woken up this morning still feeling crappy and coughing like she's been down the pit. Honestly I've had the year from hell between everything. I'm so fed up!

Your poor dd she must be really fed up. Keep on to the doctors. When my dd was in hospital she also had something in her xray and said it seemed like she has numerous pockets of infection even though she'd had antibiotics the week before, they think the infection is what caused the trigger for asthma. The repeat xray was fine. Illness is a massive trigger for my dd. The doctor has referred her back to paediatrician for a full diagnosis but apparently they've rejected it as the doctor hasn't put enough information on the referral. It's awful sitting around waiting. I hate winter time because that's when she picks up every bug going and ends up ill. I really hope they have answers for you and she gets the right support. I feel like I'm constantly on the phone to the doctor then the school.

That's crazy! My DD had an xray when she was in hospital and had a haze on her lung on 2 X-rays, they then questioned a long term lung condition. Now apparently the third X-ray it's gone and she's been given the diagnosis of asthma and a brown pump aswell as her blue one... the haze was apparently from when she had parainfluenza?

Wow your poor dd having 3 xrays bless her. My dd has the brown and blue aswell. She was using the blue quite a bit after she left hospital but now it's mainly when she starts wheezing or her chest gets tight i guve her 2 puffs of the blue inhaler and it calms it down. They won't fully diagnose asthma because she's only had 1 hospital stay and hasn't had her blue inhaler for 6 weeks so still classing it as suspected asthma. I tried to tell them the reason for that will be she's been on school holidays for 6 weeks so hasn't picked up any bugs. I wish the school were more supportive when she's off sick bit I suppose its out of their hands.

It's a real nightmare it seems with asthma and diagnosis ect!
Does your DD get phlegm stuck in the back of her nose/throat making her sick at night? Every single time my daughter gets the dreaded chesty cough it makes her sick at night with the phlegm! It's like we're on repeat every few months.

It doesn't make her sick but does keep her awake at night if she's too congested and no matter what I do nothing seems to work. That sounds awful for your dd. My dd woke up coughing this morning for the first time in 6 weeks which I was expecting now she's back school

It's awful isn't it! Hopefully it's not going to be anything major for your DD. Every time I hear a cough my whole body and soul scrunches up!

Same here. I even brought a oximeter to check her levels myself. It's not always accurate but when she has a cough and wheeze he revel drop so I know when I can give the blue inhaler which then relieves it and her levels go back up. It can be very worrying when asthma is suspected

Me too!! I have one to check her oxygen too! I've had rows off drs for it and one even wanted to take it off me! But under the pressure the NHS is under and the drs not seeing people I feel much more safe with one. For example on a regular day hers is 99, now with this cough it's 94/95 at times! So I use it to see if she needs her pump.

The brown? Yeah this is day 2 of the brown one. She's had the blue one for probably just short of a year.

Hopefully in a few weeks the brown inhaler will start to make a notable difference then.

What do you think it will improve? Like how chesty she gets, or how quick she picks up chesty coughs ect. Poor thing we're on day 5 of her still feeling rubbish!

Is she taking the brown one morning and night? It really helped my dds nightime cough. I've not told the doctor I have an oximeter because I know they'll tell me off for having one but it's really helped me know when her levels are down when she's ill

Yeah! She's having it in the morning once and then in the night once, today is day 2. When we were in Hospital the dr saw mine on the bed! Haha they are really helpful.
