Long lasting fever

Dd (13) is on day 12 of a fever, she ended up on childrens ward for a couple of nights (day 7-8) as it was sitting around 40 and wouldn’t come down, she was really lethargic and just looked and felt awful.

Conclusion was viral but she’s still sitting around 38c, is this normal?! I’ve never experienced a fever lasting quite so long. They discharged her when temp was around 37.4 and her severe headache was gone. It went back up during her first night home.

I’m currently annoying her by checking temperature 2/3 times a day but maybe I should just chill and wait for it to pass? I’m usually not one to run to GP with every little thing but this has got me second guessing myself.

What other symptoms does she have?

If it (the fever) came down but has gone back up I'd see your GP or if you have open access to the ward ring them. It could indicate there is a secondary infection (maybe bacterial) that requires treatment. 12 days of a fever for a virus is a long time, although not impossible.

So it was mainly headache & severe stomach pain. Headache is away, stomach pain it looks like was period paid (she gets them awful and came on in hosp). She did see surgeons and have ultrasound but all seemed fine.

she feels fine within herself apart from feeling warm. Not eating much is she’s drinking plenty.

the whole time she’s had the fever it’s not been constant though it’s been up and down so not sure if that’s an indicator?

She has autism (well in final stages of diagnosis) and had flat out said she’s not going back to hospital, so praying it doesn’t come to that again!

her crp was 36 & low lymphocytes apparently. She’s been anaemic previously

I dunno; it sounds like it could be something chronic rumbling away. My DC had similar symptoms before being diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's)...constant low grade fever spiking up to 39-40 intermittently. Also had chronic diarrhoea. CRP mildly raised like your child's. Did they rule out ibd?

Hmm my DM has crohns, I actually wondered about something chronic or autoimmune. She constantly has issues with stomach cramps, no diarrhoea but prone to constipation.

They’ve done so many bloods over the years but this is the first that’s came back with any crp markers, that they’ve mentioned to me anyway.

It’s hard cause I really would like her in and investigated, I also think she’s got endometriosis (like me), but her asd, being a teen & anxiety make her very reluctant to get investigated.

Just coming back to say we have a son who was dx at 17 with severe pancolitis (now facing an extra dx of Crohns at 20) and his CRP never really raises - even when he was admitted to hospital as an emergency just before his dx and was basically pooing pure blood 12 times a day and nearly needed a blood transfusion - got away with iron infusions x 2. Sympathise with the autism - we have a few autistic "high functioning" kids and it can be challenging when they set against something!!

Apparently the CRP is a quirk in some people and isn't unusual with IBD.
