My 2 1/2 year old non verbal son had a fever of 40.4 degrees a few days ago (Saturday 5pm), called 111 and they took their time and got a call back saying to go to a&e. (By this time his fever had dropped to 38.8 degrees) so we waited instead to see if it would drop to normal.
However in the morning it had increased again. So headed to a&e (Sunday 8am), which when we got there and the 4 hour wait, it had dropped a bit. The doctor examined and said his tonsils looked a little inflamed and prescribed antibiotics and sent us home.
Since then his fever has gone and his temperature is normal, however I'm concerned as since we went to a&e in the early hours yesterday up until now (Monday 6pm - approx 35+ hours), he has probably collectively been awake for an hour.
He has had a little food and drink, but can't seem to stay awake longer than 5 minutes before dozing off. His poo's have also come out all different consistencies with the last one being quite runny like water. He has had a few wet nappies. He also has blue around the eyes at the moment.
We also had two contradicting statements of info from the doctor and the 111 doctor. 111 said give paracetamol and a&e doctor said nurofen. So far just kept to the paracetamol.
Phoned the local gp surgery today, and that was no help at all. Saying to give him ice cream. (He's dairy intolerant, I don't even think they read his file) and didn't actually address our concern of sleep and just said he's probably tired.
Should I be concerned that his body hasn't fought off the infection and has just given up? Why can't we keep him awake? Should I be rushing back to a&e?
Has anyone had anything similar?
