DD10 has not kept any food down in 6 days

Last Sunday, DD10 told us that she had a tummy ache. We sent her to school on Monday and got a call around 11 am as she had been sick. We picked her up and she’s been at home since. Every day we give her some food at spaced out intervals through the day. She brings everything up.

We can’t get an appointment at the doctors (we’re not in the U.K. so don’t have your wonderful NHS system) and the hospitals are full of very sick people who we don’t want to expose her to.

I hope this doesn’t sound like a humble brag, but DD has never been ill before. We’re worried 😟.

Any advice? Thanks.

Is she able to keep fluids down op?

Marie2022 · 10/09/2022 10:16

@PoppyBlunt thanks for your reply. Yes, oddly enough she’s fine with fluids.

Has she had Covid in the last few weeks?

LionessesRules · 10/09/2022 10:19

Can you give her fluids with sugars and a tiny bit if salt in?

What type of food has she tried? Banana, rice, apples, toast are the things to try, in very small amounts, initially

Hope she's feeling better soon.

@ItsNotUnusualToBe Thanks for your reply. No, she had Covid at the end of January but not since.

@LionessesRules Thank you. Yes, we’ve tried everything.

Is she pooing normally? Does she have a temperature? Do you know her weight before and if so can you check to see if its down?

Do you think there's a psychological element? I say that because it seems to have tied in with schools reopening. Does she enjoy school or does 8t make her anxious?

Marie2022 · 10/09/2022 10:23

@Spidey66 She’s not really pooing. The occasional high temperature. We’re towards the end of term here, so not new term nerves.

BRAT is not recommended anymore. Let her have whatever she fancies.

I would be seeking medical advice, online doctor? You can access doctor care anywhere online from anywhere in the world.

Fishandchipsagain · 10/09/2022 10:32

Have you tried oral rehydration? Where about s are you ? May be find something in a local pharmacy. She should be seen by doctor or gp or similar soon . Being sick drains them out . Are you logged on to nhs online or with ur gp surgery back in the UK? They could arrange as call back from gp or something for you . Hope your child feels better soon.

Barrawarra · 10/09/2022 10:35

Is she asking for food? I think you need a doctor but in absence of that I’d be tempted to allow her gut to rest, and just give rehydration salts/ diluted apple juice/ sugary drinks for a day before trying gentle foods again. I know the BRAT advice is outdated but to me it still makes sense to begin with very plain foods like toast, salty broth etc.

Marie2022 · 10/09/2022 10:41

She’s not asking for food, no. And hardly drinking today according to my husband who’s been looking after her.

I really do think you should get her checked out. When my Dd was around 6 she had vomiting over a long weekend, and saying her tummy was sore. No diarrhoea. She was always a healthy child and on this occasion she wasn’t particularly complaining about pain or feeling unwell. Was still running around etc
She was happy to go to school on the Monday, all dressed in her school uniform. I called my DM and she advised I should take Dd to hospital A & E (also not in U.K. at the time) as a precaution.
Turned out that her appendix had burst, and ended up in hospital for a week! Thankfully all ended well. She’s 35 now.
I still feel bad about it now. Almost sending Dd to school with burst appendix! The doctors at the time said she must have a high pain threshold.
Wishing your Dd a speedy recovery.

If she is now having reduced fluid intake after 6 days she needs a medical review.

Barrawarra · 10/09/2022 17:20

Yes not drinking is much more significant- can you go to the emergency dept of hospital wherever you are? I imagine she must be quite weak and lethargic by now?

MermaidMeemaw · 11/09/2022 07:20

OP, how is your Dd? I wish you all well.
