Tips needed - looking after my child after his circumcision

Hi all

I'd appreciate some input on how to look after my son's wound area after his circumcision operation yesterday.

Everything went well, and the doctor said he'd recover very soon. The thing that concerns me is the ooze coming out of the wound area. Doctors did mention that we can just gently wipe that off. But this has been difficult to do, as overnight they dry off and sticks to his forehead skin which feels extremely sensitive. He complains when I tried to rub it off with even the slightest pressure. I tried using cotton buds with TCP to soften the dried ooze but that did not work.

I am thinking about leaving it until after 48 hours when we can wash the area, to see if we can wash them off. Is this OK? Would it be a high risk of infection? Do any parents have any experience looking after your children after circumcision?

Many thanks for any input!

Thanks for the support @N0tfinished , completely get what you are saying.

Being on various forums for years I kinda expected the negative and unhelpful attitude of some, and I learned to ignore those cause there are always people who really try to help - thanks to those.

If people shouldn't come online to seek help (whatever nature that is) like some have said here, then what is the purpose of forums like this

Doctor recommended us some sort of medicinal olive oil, which worked a treat. I do think it's odd that people ask why the operation happened. How is it relevant? From what I can see the terminal illness/bereavement forum isn't full of people asking whether the dying relative smoked or ate too much. The forum is supposed to support mums....

Just an update: been to the GP who confirms he's on the right track. He recommended warm bath from day 3 and that will help soften and remove the yellow crust dried from the ooze. The swelling is normal and will last for a few more days. Vaseline really helped, my son said it makes him feel more comfortable. Thanks again to all your advice so far they really helped me!

Glad to hear everything's as it should be. Hope he continues to do well.

Use Vaseline and a square of gauze wrapped around the area. Redo the Vaseline and gauze a few times a day.

No underwear, pajama bottoms, or sheets covering him at night. Turn on the heat in his room if necessary.

Sorry he had to get this done at a later stage in life than usual.

Ignore the anti circumcision warriors here.

There's a lot more heat than light on threads to do with circumcision on MN.

Tips needed after a circumcision.

Sorry OP…. But the wording is a wee bit unfortunate.

Hi all, my 14 year old has been told he needs a circumcision and honestly I feel sick with worry. There is not much info out there about teenage circumcision or answers from kids who have had it done.
He was able to retract when he was younger but then couldn't. He currently has no symptoms other than the doctor said the foreskin is extremely tight (phismosis) and my son says he has a tiny bit of ballooning when he pees.
Urologist gave him some steroid cream, but given his age doesn't think it will do anything. Apparently the hole is very very small.
I never wanted him to be circumcised and feel really upset for him.

hi @WMLIN , if indeed he needs to have this done it will occur as general surgery, freezing and pain medication will be available. it will heal and most likely be fine. the surgeon who does this should have recent relevant information for you and your son to review.
the advent of long acting freezing medications (which last 24+hours) has really been helpful for all surgeries from orthopedic to cosmetic.
the tissue involved heals very quickly.

When my DS was circumcised the hospital said we should bathe his penis in warm, salty water once or twice a day, from day 2 onwards. We used to sit him in a baby bath. He healed very quickly with no complications.

Perhaps this practice is no longer recommended nowadays, but it seemed to work for DS.

jhs2zz · 06/03/2023 09:22

@Fromwetome if doctors or nurses did give plenty of information then there won't be so many people asking the same questions. If you live in the UK and use public NHS you should know how the services vary from city to city. If not, I don't feel you are qualified to comment like this, and it does not hurt if you just keep quiet.

@WMLIN feel sorry for your DS but feel free to dm me if you like. My son is now fully recovered and he's happy and healthy.

I think cleaning the wound with cotton buds would help it to heal faster, also gently vaseline it.

Given that this thread is well over a year old, I would imagine that it has healed or fallen off by now.

No you shouldn't be surprised!
