Kidney scan showed abnormal appearance

My son is 8 years old, he has been under the continence clinic for nighttime wetting for a few years. He doesn’t suffer with UTIs, he took a lot longer than most children to become dry in the day and he still sometimes has wet accidents in the day. He doesn’t seem to have any warning, he just suddenly needs to pee and can’t hold it for long at all or he wets himself. He was referred for an ultrasound scan which he had last week.

I’ve just had a follow up call to discuss the scan and the nurse said she wants to speak to the doctor about the scan results tomorrow and then they will most likely refer him to Alder Hey to see a specialist consultant. I asked what the scan had shown and all she could tell me was that the appearance of the kidneys wasn’t quite normal but until she spoke to the doctor she wasn’t sure if that was what was the cause of the nighttime wetting or not and she thinks the doctor will refer to Alder Hey. So now I’m worrying what this abnormal appearance could mean. Anyone have a similar experience and can help? DH is saying not to worry it can’t be urgent otherwise they wouldn’t have waited over a week to call us back. I’m not so sure.

For context DS was born extremely preterm (24 wks) and was in hospital for 4 months before he was discharged. He had all the typical preemie issues but seemed to have escaped relatively unscathed.

Impossible to say which abnormality from that information. But I would say that the vast majority of things that show up on children's kidney scans involve "keep an eye, and promptly treat any water infections" rather than OMG levels of worry. 24 weeks? He's certainly not made life easy for you!

My DS has duplex kidney. Apparently it's very common. Picked up (a bit too late- useless GP) from repeat UTIs. They were talking about prophylactic antibiotics for a while but now he just gets seen by a consultant once a year and has a urine test and blood pressure monitoring

Thanks for the replies. I’ve tried not to worry until I know more information tomorrow. He has never ever had a UTI though, the only reason he had the scan was due to night wetting still. I just wish the nurse had waited until she had reviewed the scan with the doctor rather than ringing and telling me this vague information about an abnormal appearance and that he will be referred to Alder Hey without being able to explain why.

@nocoolnamesleft you’re right it was a stressful time but I thought we were over the worst of it.
