Baby going from 9th to 98th percentile

Hi all. Baby boy is almost 10 weeks. He weighed 6lbs 12oz at birth (born at 37 weeks), 7lbs 5oz at two weeks, and 12lbs 10oz at six weeks. We had our 6-8 week GP check Friday and he now weighs 15lbs 2oz, which is apparently on the 98th percentile. At two weeks he was on the 9th percentile!

Apparently due to this jump in percentiles, GP wants him weighed every two weeks, and he may potentially be referred to a consultant to make sure there's no underlying health issues contributing to his rapid weight gain 😔

He is also on the 95th percentile for length so to me that means he's just a big boy. He's perfectly healthy, happy, and smiley. He is exclusively breastfed and feeds every 2-4 hours in the day, and only feeds once at night.

I thought BFing was going well but I now feel like I'm doing something wrong 😕

Does anyone else have babies that jumped percentiles? What was the outcome?

Hi @IdiotSandwich05 we had similar. Our LO was 8lb8 at birth at 37+2. He dropped to (I think) 44th centile at the 6 week check but I put that down to bottle feeding expressed milk out of the fridge (was advised if he'd take it, wasn't any need to heat it up) and we had tongue tie and latch issues so most feeds were from the bottle until we could sort that out. By about 8 weeks we'd got the latch sorted and he was feeding from me directly and he started climbing the centiles... Topped out at about 95th I think and when we had to go to A&E when he was 20 weeks old (don't use a sling with tight trousers as it can cause bruising... 🤦🤦🤦) They couldn't believe how heavy he was. I was told there and then that if he was formula fed they'd have concerns about being over fed but as he was EBF then it was okay 🤷

He was a total chunk until he started to move and then the weight gain started to slow. He's three in November and has been around 16kg since last April, so is now definitely slimming down.

I was a slim baby/child but was formula fed. My mum reminded me that a family friend I grew up with was a really chubby baby in comparison and she was EBF. I think it's quite common because breast milk is really easy for them to digest, so don't worry, you're not doing anything wrong!

I would say it's down to the fact he is EBF, I think it's quite common that these babies gain weight quicker in the early days and then it levels off. It's reassuring that he will be monitored in case of underlying issues but I would try not to worry and keep up the feeding as normal.
