Teenager with ongoing back pain

Has anyone had any experience of back pain in teenagers? My DS is 13 and has had ongoing lower back that has been persistent for around 5 months, he has discolouration on the area that hurts (not bruising), he also complains of ankle and wrist pain along side small areas of non blanching rash that gp isn’t concerned about, blood have all come back within the normal ranges. He has an X-ray on his Lower spine booked for next week and the GP has also referred him for physio.

my concerns are that he is always moaning that somewhere hurts on his body. He doesn’t play computer and is very active playing sports most days.
Any advice or experiences would be appreciated

This is total laymens terms but hyper mobility? Or growth spurt? My dd had loads of aches and pains after a growth spurt.

I have no idea what hypermobility is? And the gp considered a growth spurt but said that the pain should not have lasted this long.

Hi,
I posted a while back about my DS who is 13 and has had ongoing lower back that has been persistent for around 5 months, he has discolouration on the area that hurts (not bruising), he also complains of ankle and wrist pain along side small areas of non blanching rash that gp isn’t concerned about, blood have all come back within the normal ranges. He has now had an X-ray on his Lower spine that has came back ok,
His back is still hurting and he now has swollen lymph nodes in his neck.
I feel like I am an obsessing mother, when I keep taking him back to the Gp and the tests are all ok so far. I don’t want to keep subjecting him to tests if I’m overreacting.

so my question is would you be concerned in my position?
lower back pain
small areas of non blanching rashes and now swollen lymph nodes in the neck?

thanks
😊

I would be concerned. I would be requesting an urgent hospital referral for a biopsy of those lymph nodes. You are not obsessing- you are seeking appropriate medical attention for a persisting and now worsening problem. Go back to the gp and make sure he is seen in person.

My daughter has just been diagnosed with EDS, if you Google it will explain in detail. She has problems with joins etc, worth reading up on.

Thank you for your reassurance that I’m not overreacting it’s very much appreciated. I have contacted my GP and I am awaiting a callback so hopefully we can get some answers as I am very concerned about his lymph nodes 🙂

I’d never heard of EDS but after reading about it, there are a number of similarities so thank you, I have rang my gp and I’m waiting to hear back from them. Hopefully they take my concerns seriously.

Any psoriasis or stomach issues in the family? Pain and rash makes me think psoriatic arthritis which is a related (and genetic) condition.

Marnie1909103 · 15/09/2022 18:07

No psoriasis or gastro problems at all. It feels like as time goes on he has another issue that surfaces. All bloods are normal and so was X-ray. I want to get to the bottom of it but I also hate the idea of constantly dragging him to the drs (teenage boy that hates being seen with his mum 🤣)
