Vomiting and can't keep water down

We've been really lucky with DD4 in that she's rarely got ill but she's finally been hit by some sort of vomiting bug (no diarrhoea). I've got no experience of this but currently she's been vomiting every 10-20 mins for the last four hours and best as I can tell can't keep water down. At what point do you worry? I know it's not yet but her vomiting hasn't got any less frequent at all.

I would phone 111 for advice at this point.

I’m no expert (currently up with own ill child) but if it continues you could always phone 111 for advice. Surely soon she won’t have anything left to be sick with?

NotMyDayJob · 22/08/2022 03:41

At this point it's just bile. I'm reluctant to call 111 because when I rang to get advice about my baby who had conjunctivitis (because I couldn't get through to GP) they absolutely insisted she had to be checked within the hour and the nearest place to do that was a & e, but they'd let them know I was coming, when I got there it was a NINE HOUR WAIT. even with a four month old baby. So I'm not doing that at 4 in the morning.

I forgot to add, we've all had a bit of a bug, she's just being more sick than we have (me and DH).

Poor you all. Awful when they’re ill. I do understand about A and E. Hopefully her stomach just needs to calm down.

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 04:32

How is she now?

pinheadlarry · 22/08/2022 05:17

I would go to A&e or urgent care just to be safe, they ask
Does she have a high temp?
Whens the last time she passed urine?
Does she have a new rash?
Is her eyes sensitive to light ?
Cold hand and feet?
Fast breathing?

You can give her rehydration solution every time she vomits, that's what they give us a bottle of in the A&E
give a teaspoon of dioralyte every 10 minutes, i just trickle it in slowly bit by bit into the mouth
If not dioralyte, teaspoons of room temperature water every 10 mins
And hopefully the time between the vomits will get less soon
I don't give food for a few hours and then after only dry stuff like crackers, toast at first to see how they handle it.

Keep checking for the dehydration because thats the main complication of the vomiting, that's why they always tell the young children to come into A&E with the V&D bugs because they're at risk to get dehydrated very quickly and check her for sunken eyes, dry pale skin, no tears, floppy, pinch test on the back of the hand

Hope she gets better soon bless her x

Try a fluid challenge, 5mls of water or squash every 5mins see if she can tolerate the small amounts.

If not call 111 as she is a risk of dehydration

pinheadlarry · 22/08/2022 05:20

I said 10 minutes but it might be teaspoon of dioralyte /water every 5 minutes depending..

Thank you, I will try this in the morning, I'm trying to let her get some sleep. I am very mindful of dehydration although she's had no diarrhoea so it's not as bad as it could be. She has no rashes etc and in between vomiting she seems normal.

I'm also not taking her to a & e at this point.

No problem I hope she feels better soon, as long as she is having good wet nappies she is okay. Obviously you know her best so just go with your mummy instincts.

Dinoteeth · 22/08/2022 06:37

5ml of juice every 5 mins.

Amy more than that will make her sick, but the juice tastes better than dioralyte and has sugars in it unlike water. No milk obviously.

I’d have a very low threshold for getting her seen today if she’s the same.

She's been out of nappies for a while now, but she doesn't normally get up to go to the toilet in the night any more so that's why I'm not so worried yet.

I'm timing how long she's going between bouts of sickness to see if it's extending, overlaid with if she can sip water. If there's no improvement by 8 we'll be calling the GP. I'm absolutely taking no risks I'm just also not prepared to have 111 send me to a and e again for no reason

Thanks for everyone's advice and night time support. She turned a corner at about 730 and hasn't been sick for a couple of hours now. She's been sipping a solution of weak apple juice mixed with diarylyte and is keeping it down so I think we're ok, although definitely a duvet day for her.
