Glass test, not fading. MMR vacc 12 days ago

Hi so I called NHS 24 as 1 year old has came out in a full body rash. She had her MMR vaccination on the 13th and was a little tired, irritable etc but generally ok. On Friday I noticed a rash starting on one side of her face & behind her ear now it's spread down her back, legs, stomach & round her mouth. Like little pin prick red spots.

Yesterday she was grumpy - tired but not sleeping, not eating much and just generally unwell gave her some Calpol and she went to sleep ok. Today the rash has spread more and had originally just thought the tiredness was due to her starting nursery.

So when I phoned NHS 24 she was asleep in her sleeping bag so couldn't check with a glass but have done it now the spots don't disappear?? I'm waiting for out of hours to phone back on what to do next but I'm starting to panic and don't know if I should just go to a&e as the spots aren't disappearing. Please help x

Go, better safe than sorry!

A non blanching rash stop asking people on mumsnet and your dd down to a and e for a medical professional to check on her. Hope it’s nothing serious but better to be safe with little ones

boobot1 · 21/08/2022 12:54

Perhaps call 111 and ask them, if they think hospital they will call ahead

IsItTeatimeYet · 21/08/2022 12:54

I would go don’t wait

DustinsHat · 21/08/2022 12:56

111 will send you to A&E for a non blanching rash, I'd set off to A&E yourself, if you have a phone first service ring them and tell them you're on the way.

Don't panic though, the timing is perfect for mini measles I'm sure it'll be fine, but you have to go to A&E anyway.

Missssmamaaa · 21/08/2022 12:58

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly dramatic but I've waited 2.5 hrs and out of hours haven't phoned so I'm going round now x

a&e now for the non blanching rash. It can be a sign of septicemia and is associated with meningococcal/meningitis. They will likely see you pretty quickly as this will be considered mire urgent than a lot of other things.

It’s very likely she’ll ill from something else and the fact she recently had the MMR vaccination is just a coincidence.

It's pretty common for a measles type rash after an MMR - all three of mine got one. But you have no way of knowing if it's benign or not, especially if it's not blanching. Hope it goes okay.

It might be something called ITP, it’s a rash of tiny red/purple dots that can then develop into large purple bruise-like patches all over. It’s an immune system reaction to the MMR jab, my little one had it after her jab. The reaction makes the platelet levels in the blood go extremely low which causes the rash/bruising but then the levels will come back up by themselves. I went to a&e thinking the worst but it turned out to be ITP, stayed in hospital for 3 nights while they monitored her platelet levels. She was totally fine but has to have some kind of antibody test before her next jabs. Hopefully it’s not this but just wanted to leave this here in case it helps! It’s not particularly dangerous but they like to monitor it to make sure platelets all go back to normal. Hope she’s ok!

DrRuthGalloway · 22/08/2022 08:29

I agree - ITP.
My son had it after a flu vaccine.
Still needs seeing at A and E and monitoring.

Missssmamaaa · 22/08/2022 17:57

Just an update - went to a&e and told it was a viral rash. Asked the nurse about it being a vaccine reaction and she basically looked at me like I was talking absolute shite even though the little pamphlet said it was a common side effect. Also she has been pretty poorly since and was up every hour last night screaming the place down but according to the nurse she was completely fine 🤔

My boy's legs a couple of days after diagnosis of itp when the bloodspots had faded a bit. Can you share a pic of your daughter's rash? Did they do any blood tests?
