Possible scoliosis in 10yo

Does anyone have any experience with adolescent scoliosis?

DD, 10, has had back pain for a while and family history on one side of scoliosis. Finally got a GP appt and he can see some abnormality and has referred to physio. Is physio the usual referral? GP didn't want to make a call on x-ray because of her age, but wondering if she should have just been sent straight to a specialist? Any thoughts/advice very welcome.

We have an appt lined up in a couple of weeks with a spinal surgeon who was in the list sent by the scoliosis association. We're seeing him privately and covered for initial diagnostic x-rays but he also works out of Bristol Children's Hospital on the NHS if for any reason we aren't covered for further treatment.

It sounds like there can be quite a curve that isn't necessarily visible to the untrained naked eye? Dreading what the x-ray shows up but glad we are on the road to getting it at least.

Good news therouge

Both our daughters are privately braced for scoliosis. Both completed schroth physio program with SOS. You definitely need a baseline x-ray (EOS if possible to reduce radiation) Now working alongside an AMAZING physio called Debs Turnbull. Wish we knew about her from the beginning. Cobb angles reduced massively and spinal rotation almost disappeared. These kids deserve more than an NHS Boston brace with no physio recommendations.

Meant to add that at age 10 you ve hopefully caught it early dependant on whether or not she's started her period. Our youngest was detected due to older sister at age 11 (9 months pre menses) and with brace and physio hers has virtually been reversed. Good luck and keep us posted x x

Hi
I had a spinal fusion for scoliosis at 16 ( a long time ago )
But happy to talk about my experience if you want to DM me
Can reassure you it has had little negative impact on my life .:. Apart from giving up riding and impact sports

Spinal fusion success... depends if its the whole back or partial, and the bone graft taking.
My daughter's rods broke twice, on the third replacement there were complications, involving hemorrhaging, so an emergency re-op, (following with reeducation in a special centre to regain strength & mobility in her legs for 6 months.) there was also a rush back to hospital for Cauda equina syndrome* with* bladder dysfunction ((another op,) then 6 months later a final bone graft, yet another op.
She has a persisting bladder problem a year later, she was off work fir 15 months & then returned part time.
Her bone graft seems to have finally been a success, she was esteemed to be a valid candidate for the use of a super booster for the bone graft, (only a handful a year, covered by the French health system (serious amount of 1000's of euros)
She still has permanent back pain, but says thats the least of her worries, the bladder problem is worse....

Late to the party but in case our experience can be of any use (on here or DM), my daughter is 13 now and was diagnosed at 11. She's been in a brace for two years and will have surgery ideally one year after she gets her period (possibly earlier if brace compliance issues..).

In this time she has continued football, swimming, taken up saxophone... the brace is not easy (increasingly psychologically apart from the physical aspects), but it has worked for her (main curve is at threshold for surgery and the brace has held it there - once off, of course, the curve will worsen, hence we know surgery will be necessary)
