Croup advice please

Hi, my 3 yo has croup. We took him to a and e on Monday and they gave him a dose of steroids. It worked and we were discharged.

Today he’s been wheezing again with a cough (not barking) and a temp of 39.3 that came down with calpol.

Is this normal for croup? Is it worth trying to see our gp tomorrow? This is the first time we’ve had croup in the family so I’m not sure how long it takes to go. He’s definitely much better then Monday when he couldn’t talk because he was struggling for breathe.

Any advice welcome, thank you x

I’d take him to see someone for sure. One of mine had croup and pneumonia at the same time. I’m not saying you’re dealing with something on that level here, just that it’s possible to have croup alongside something else. Hope he’s feeling better very soon!

My son always got croup before he had a cold, but it never come back like that. Maybe just get him checked out in case, for peace of mind :)

Thank you. I’ll try and get an appointment today. I seriously doubt I’ll get one but I’ll give it go!

Yeah get an appointment today, if you can't then phone 111 and get their help. If he isn't better I'd take him to A&E. Both my children get croup allllll the time, so much so that I've been prescribed a tablet form of the steroids to use at home when needed. I still have to take them to A&E sometimes but it rarely returns the next day following steroids. He's not better, trust your gut.

One of mine used to get croup and viral wheeze, the wheeze needed an inhaler. You could tell she needed to be seen for the wheeze when she couldn't talk jn full sentences without having to take a breath. Have you got a minor injuries they basically used to triage her there for us and advise hospital or not.

DD has hayfever but the form it takes is a painful hacking croupy cough - slight asthma too. It took me ages to spot that it was hayfever because she has none of what I think are the standard symptoms (red eyes, sneezing). Turns out that a fair few sufferers don't so worth asking about that as well.
