15 year old breast lump - breast clinic won’t see her

As the above really. We visited GP twice (after first app GP was keen to see her again a couple of weeks later hence the second appointment) who sent a referral to the 2 week wait clinic. They have responded that because of her age/family history (no breast cancer known) that they will not see her - they’ve said they are only seeing “red list” patients and she does not fall into that category.

I queried with our surgery who checked with GP who said there was nothing they could do about it.

So other than private, where do I go from here? Is there a way to appeal?

I realise she is low risk, and I realise that the issues on the waiting lists will be related to cuts and covid.

But that doesn’t help me get my daughter seen.

Any advice, please?

I don’t no how it all works but can you ask the GP to refer you to a clinic in a different NHS area?

Get a private appointment ASAP. If they find anything, go back with the results and insist on a referral.

JerkintheMerkin · 09/08/2022 16:27

I had a couple at that age. Turned out to be what are called breast mouse (Fibroadenoma). That's what it most likely is so try not to worry but of course go private if necessary to get them looked at if the GP isn't much help. Hope your DD feels ok.

Are you within the NHS? Or elsewhere?

Pink15 · 09/08/2022 21:19

It should be referred to paediatrics not breast clinic at this age according to our local guidelines

Mischance · 09/08/2022 21:23

I agree - it makes sense for a paediatric consultant to see her. Ask GP.

LargeLegoHaul · 09/08/2022 21:48

You could ask the GP to refer to a rapid access paediatric clinic, who could then do an internal referral if necessary and the criteria might be different for internal referrals. You could also speak to PALS. The other option is, as BattenburgDonkey posted, asking for a referral to a different Trust.

LargeLegoHaul · 09/08/2022 21:51

According to this adolescents can be referred to the breast clinic.

Another one that has a daughter that has surgery twice to remove breast "mice". Apparently they are hormone fed and can vary depending on the hormone cycle. My poor teen has terrible issues with periods and has PCOS and ends and hers just got bigger and bigger. The last surgery removed 3 the size of lemons. But then suddenly it died down around age 22.

I hope your daughter can be seen by paediatrics.

Hi, my Daughter too has a breast lump noticed Friday after GP closed 🙄 calling them first thing and so worried. Do you mind if I ask what happened for your Daughter please?

Wigeon · 09/10/2022 21:42

Tagging @Jowasace so that she sees your question (she probably isn’t still checking this thread).

Andrea48 · 09/10/2022 21:52

Thank you. I’m new to this and don’t know how to use. Very grateful for you tagging the lady for me. I’d never have realised to do that.

SocialConnotations · 10/10/2022 23:32

@Andrea48 I'm sure you know this already, but just wanted to say how INCREDIBLY rare it would be for a lump to be anything sinister at 15. Whereas it's really quite common to have normal, unworrying lumps in teenagers. Hope the doc could be reassuring, and that you're doing OK.

Hi, thank you for your reply. We could only see the nurse today who thought it might be a breast bud, but in my opinion I think it’s too far back into the fatty part of her breast. I thought, and so do most websites, that breast buds are only behind the nipple or areola.
what’s your thoughts on that?
I said to the nurse surely that’s a bit far back and she said no not necessarily 🤷‍♀️
