Grey line on eyeball

DS is 7. Diagnosed neurological genetic condition. Can't walk/talk but understands everything.

About 10 days ago noticed a black shadow on the white of his eye. 3 o'clock position. Sometimes it's there. Sometimes it not.

Went to the gp this morning. It wasn't there. The go doesn't know what it is and basically said watch and wait.

I'm so worried about it..what can it be. It can't have always been there as I know every mark on his body. It looks like someone has used a marker pen that's running out so draw a straight line down his eyeball at the 3 o clock position. I'm so worried I feel sick and I keep checking and checking him

Sometimes it's there sometimes it's not. It must be different lights. What can it be. He's a healthy boy and he had said 'yeah' to pain and pointed at his eye but I think he thinks that's that's i want him to say

Can someone please talk to me. I've been through so much woth him. ICU twice due to seizures and stopping breathing. High dependency another time. Undiagnosed neurological condition for years. And not this grayish line on his eyeball

I'd ring an optician and ask for their advice rather than gp. They can still refer into ophthalmology if needed.

We've had dc in glasses since very young - age 2 (dd1) and aged 8 months for our twins. They were under ophthalmology initially as a result of dd1 being referred by health visitor, so that's another avenue to consider if you are worried.

If you can, try and take a picture next time you see it and email in to gp with a note stating this is what you meant when you saw them on X date. As then they can attach it to your son's record as well.

minisoksmakehardwork · 08/08/2022 11:34

But optician would always be my first call with eye issues with dc. Regardless of age.

I've got him an appointment at 3pm today with a random optitions that was the only one with an appointment today

Hello

Just from googling it sounds like either Scleral melanocytosis (basically a kind of birth mark) or Axenfeld loop (a visible loop of nerve that is close to the surface). Both benign.

However I agree it is worth getting it checked at an optician or dr.

HealthAnxietyspoilsme · 08/08/2022 11:37

What if its a tumour or cancer. I need to know

Mini pie. Even though I've only just noticed it? I doubt I've missed this for the last 7 years. I know every mark on him.

I think it's unwise to ask strangers on the internet if it's cancer. I'm sorry you have been through so much but only a doctor can help you here.

Motnight · 08/08/2022 11:43

Good luck with the appointment today, Op. You sound very anxious, understandably so, but no one on Mumsnet is going to be able to tell you what this is.

minipie · 08/08/2022 11:47

Yes, scleral melanocytosis gets more prominent with increasing age so it’s quite possible it wouldn’t have been visible before. If it is that.

HealthAnxietyspoilsme · 08/08/2022 12:03

OK I'll ask the optition about that today minipie.

Thank you

HealthAnxietyspoilsme · 08/08/2022 12:09

Its says that scleral melanocytosis is more common in people with adain decent hiwvet my ds is pale skinned, blue eyes and blond hair. I suppose there does have to be some exceptions hopefully

OP, your health anxiety will spoil your child if you're not careful. Sort it.

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 08/08/2022 12:19

My child has a grey mark on his eyeball, under his eyelid. I have never queried it, but it seems to be static and unchanging.

Oh bog off. OP’s child has had serious health incidents and a rare condition that took years to diagnose. And he’s non verbal so can’t express if something is wrong. In that context it is fully understandable and actually quite sensible that she is very alert to health issues.

HealthAnxietyspoilsme · 08/08/2022 16:21

Had appointment with optition. She said she couldn't see anything (it is defo there at times and not at others) she said she thinks it's a pigmentation...so I'll just watched and wait with it.

HealthAnxietyspoilsme · 08/08/2022 20:28

I've caught a picture of it as like I said. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't.

I can't see anything

Hooveslikejagger · 08/08/2022 22:37

Do you have an eye A&E near you, or A + E with an eye unit attached? If so, go there tomorrow if you are worried.
Try and get more/better pics.

What if its a tumour or cancer. I need to know

You can get a slight blueish appearance to the sclera when you have a connective tissue disorder - but it's usually more widespread.
It does not look like a tumour at all.

I wonder if he's got slight hay fever and it's made the the surrounding conjunctiva a bit inflamed?

BeethovenNinth · 09/08/2022 23:14

I also suffer health anxiety with my kids due to various issues. You have my huge huge sympathy. It’s so easy to jump to the worst

however this seems quite hard to see. It could be so many things and the chances are it will be fine.

HealthAnxietyspoilsme · 13/08/2022 08:15

Thanks everyone.

It's still there now and again in different lights. It's so strange but the optition wasn't concerned. I'll just watch and wait with it. I can't help but have a worry though right st the front of my mind all the time whilst trying to stay upbeat and happy as we are now on holiday
