Baby graining too much weight?

Hi all.

My boy is six weeks old and exclusively breastfed. He weighed 6lbs 12oz at birth (born at 37 weeks). He had his six week HV check today and he weighs 12lbs 10oz. So yes, he's piled it on but I was happy with this!

My HV insinuated I was overfeeding him and should only feed him when he's showing hunger cues (which I already do!).
She also mentioned him being at increased risk of obesity ect. Basically making me feel like I'm doing something wrong 😔 He's never had formula or a bottle.

He was also off the chart for length so to me that means he's just a big boy as opposed to overweight as he's in proportion. This is my first time breastfeeding and I thought it was going well but now I feel like I'm doing something wrong. He's a perfectly healthy, happy, content baby. Already smiling and holding his head up. He goes 2-3 hours between feeds in the day and 3-4 hours at night so it's not like I'm feeding him constantly!

Is my HV just talking b*llocks? 😂

In a word... Yes!
Keep going you're doing amazingly and ignore the HV!

COMPLETE BOLLOCKS!

I would report her to someone at the hospital to be honest. You cannot overfeed a breastfed baby.

TheseAreMyGoodPants · 06/08/2022 09:54

Sorry, mistyped! He had his HV check yesterday.

And by the way, well done for breastfeeding so effectively by 6 weeks! It’s not easy, you should be really proud of yourself.

DrJump · 06/08/2022 09:55

What shit advice you have had from the health visitor. Keep on doing what you are doing.

Lovetogarden2022 · 06/08/2022 09:57

This is completely wrong - you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. The HV needs reporting!

PinkPrawns2 · 06/08/2022 09:59

HV don't work for the hospital so don't bother reporting there!

It's fine OP! Really difficult to overfeed a BF baby,. especially if you are getting good gaps between feeds like you are.

My DD went from 50th centile at birth to 91st centile, but stayed on 50th centile for length so she looked properly chubby. She was EBF. She's older now and perfectly in proportion.

Regressionisreal · 06/08/2022 10:08

Omg this makes me so angry on your behalf! Absolutely ignore this idiotic and completely wrong HV - you cannot overfeed a breast fed baby. My baby is also EBF and on the 98th centile, a fact which until recently made me feel a bit embarrassed - I thought people would think I'm overfeeding him and I was a bit embarrassed to feed in public / around friends and family in case they were secretly like "didn't she do that only a couple of hours ago - that explains why he's such a chunk...!".

If you are following your baby's cues, you are doing perfectly. I asked the midwife this when my DS was weighed last and they reassured me that unless I was offering the breast for several feeds an hour, it was impossible to be overfeeding him. That's at 6 months too - at 6 weeks he was still cluster feeding like crazy for 6 hours a day so I probably was feeding a couple of times an hour sometimes and that's ok!

And in this heat (assuming you're in the UK) it's so important they stay hydrated, so definitely don't cut back on feeds.

Carry on as you are, you're doing brilliantly!

TheseAreMyGoodPants · 06/08/2022 10:36

Oh and GAINING, not graining... 😂

Well in the absence of a clear way to report the health visitor, I’d contact PALS at the local hospital who will presumably advise how complaints should be directed
