4 year old and headaches

So , I personally am I chronic migraine sufferer and have been for many years, part of my condition I get what is called primary stab headaches or otherwise known as ice pick headaches which is basically as it sounds - short stabs of pain gone in seconds .
Anyway , when my daughter was about 3 she had a phase of suddenly crying with random sharp pains in her head . At time she was experiencing a few colds so doctor wasn’t concerned and to be honest the time between these attacks was far and wide between and the attacks would be over in seconds . This seemed to disappear but over last few months same things seem to be happening … she will be happily playing then suddenly point or clutch her head and say ouch my head .. within seconds it’s like it never happened . I question her about it and she says she’s fine and it’s gone now .
She is very well in herself , never I’ll and is highly energetic and full of life at all times .
Would you be concerned ? She has had a few ear issues over last year( recurrent ear pain ) so I have pushed for ent referral but in all honestly she hasn’t complained of ear ache in a long while now . The headaches are happening 1-2 times a week at very most witt nothing of concern in between . No eye issues that we know of . Eating and drinking well and no sleep issues . Always happens very randomly no triggers .

My DD is like this - she’s had headaches since she was about 3. She would say her head felt “painy” and it would come and go. The peads consultant said some children are just prone to lots of headaches. She primarily gets them when she’s unwell / too hot. If she gets headaches when she wakes up / late evening and is vomiting with the pain I would seek urgent referral to hospital.

Hey ! Thanks for reply !
no red flags atall … it’s literally so sporadic . Lasts seconds and fine in between . She can go weeks without it happening aswell .

That’s good @Lkakpk 🙂 just keep an eye on them - could be a growth spurt perhaps? Get her eyes checked if you haven’t already (they can look for swelling) but I wouldn’t be too concerned if they aren’t every day / associated with red flags

Did you check out her eyes?

Lkakpk · 21/08/2022 22:06

@Chellepelle I’ve not but I think I will . I actually wore glasses as a child so probably worthwhile

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? My 4 year old has been experiencing the same, always in the same part on the right side of his head above his ear

Hi I’ve been having the same issue with my 3 year old daughter and it’s really worrying me, I’ve had her eyes checked and they are perfect.. the pains only last seconds and then she’s bk playing happily as if it never happened.. has anyone figured out what caused it with their kids?

I have heard that for some people eating oranges can bring on a headache or migraines.
I knew a mother who was told this by a migraine suffer. She stopped giving her child oranges and the headaches stoped.

@Lkakpk hi hope your girl's fine now. Have you got to the bottom of this ? And what or why is it ? As my 6 year DS had similar episodes of sharp pains on his right side of head just above his ear. Just wanted to check with other mums.
