Swollen lymph node

My son has swollen lymph node on his neck, I’ve been to the gp yesterday and they say if it’s still there in 2 weeks to take him back and not to worry, I can’t help but worry at the size of it. I’m wondering if I should go with a second opinion or wait the 2 weeks out and see if it disappears

Oh your DS’s lymph node is identical to the one my DS had earlier this year. Definitely give it a few more weeks to settle down (I assume he has recently had an infection?) I’ll be honest my son’s took months to go down and then it ballooned again following another virus. Bloods and ultrasound all clear this end (and were only done because I pushed for it) and nothing to worry about. Although it looked huge externally ultrasound revealed it was only 1cm in diameter (short axis) and just covered in lots of fatty tissue. Try not to worry.

I took him into a&e last night and they have put him on penicillin because his tonsils were swollen too, this morning the other side of his neck is just as bad, it looks awful and it's hard not to worry but hopefully they go down with the antibiotics:) I'm glad all was good with your little one!

Hi,

whst did the GP say

Ldn2D · 03/07/2023 17:35

Hey, my sons been having the exact same. He had strep a 7 weeks ago. He still has swollen lymph nodes and swollen tonsils now even 6 weeks post antibiotics. They keep telling me not to worry we’ve been back and forth to the doctors as one of his tonsils also is getting bigger! Glad it’s just not my son I’ve been worrying so much

SAEED2 · 11/06/2024 14:25

Hey @Ldn2D - that sounds very similar to my son - I'm starting to feel really worried! Except we are only five weeks post strep and four weeks post antibiotics. How is your son now? Have the node and tonsil gone down?

Dontthinkthrice · 19/08/2024 11:18

Can anyone add to this? My son has 4 that are all bigger than this. We’re on week 7. One side of his neck is totally swollen level to the edge of his ear. He has an oncology appt in a few days and I can hardly breathe with anxiety.

99.9% of cases of swollen lymph nodes that people notice in children are completely normal and nothing to worry about. The fact that your review is with oncology specifically implies that someone thought your case was a bit more concerning that the usual, for whatever reason (unless that's just the local set up for your area? Have you seen a general paediatrician as well or going straight from GP?). So I don't know how much you can read across from other people's experiences.

However, most children who have swollen lymph nodes from leukaemia/lymphoma specifically tend to look absolutely sick as a pig if it's been going on for 7 weeks, so that is a data point in your child's favour. So I wonder if that appointment is for "this is a bit weird" rather than "this is highly likely to be something scary" if that makes sense?

Thanks for this. Yes, 7 weeks after the first lump appearing he is absolutely fine. The others came up with a bout of tonsillitis or similar. Also, it was the GP who referred us ‘just in case’ but honestly these lumps are huge-normous

Hi all, I just want to say I was reassured by the doctor in the end completely as he wasn’t actually unwell. His lymph nodes are still swollen even after all this time but again he’s not unwell so I haven’t worried. Hope your little ones are ok!
