Does this graze look ok? [warning photo included]

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question - but does this cut look ok?

DS went flying on concrete yesterday. There are still tiny bits of gravel in there.

I put TCP on it straight away but tonight he has a slight temperature and can’t sleep. It has yellow sludge coming out of it.

Is this totally normal or should I take him to see the nurse tomorrow?

It looks infected to me. The gravel definitely needs to come out. GP surgery I would think.

Seeline · 31/07/2022 21:52

You need to get the gravel out! Did you wash it thoroughly before putting tcp on it?

If he has a temp, I think you should ring 111 for advice with yellow gunk coming out.

Rainydaize · 31/07/2022 21:52

I would pop to see the pharmacist in the morning

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/07/2022 21:53

I agree, that looks infected. Poor lad.

Johnnysgirl · 31/07/2022 21:54

I'd get it looked at just to put your mind at rest.

Lolliepoppie · 31/07/2022 21:55

I tried to wash it but he was screaming in pain. I made him put it in the bath and swished water over it. Then more TCP.

It had a plaster over it until this evening so I didn’t see the yellow stuff until late.

That looks infected - minor injuries in the morning

Tulipvase · 31/07/2022 21:57

My immediate thought is that the two things are unconnected.

I’d see how it is in the morning.

Anunusualfamily · 31/07/2022 22:02

have another go at getting the grit out in the shower tomorrow or if you have a syringe you can fill it with water to flush it out. TCP is yellow and you might expect some haemoserous fluid to ooze out doesn’t mean it’s infected.

Yamaya · 31/07/2022 22:09

I don't think it looks infected. Wounds go goopy when you put a plaster on sometimes. I would leave it in the air overnight and see how it looks in the morning

HeyBlaby · 31/07/2022 22:18

Please don't use TCP, just use tap water (Registered nurse)

WonderingWanda · 31/07/2022 22:21

It doesn't look like pus to me just that fluid that comes out of your skin. Bodies are very good at removing foreign objects eventually. I would keep an eye on his temperature and any redness around the cut though.

neveradullmoment99 · 31/07/2022 22:23

Could just be healing with plasma. It has a yellowish colour. I would just keep an eye on it. My dd hurt her leg with a bad graze and yellowish stuff was present but it wad just plasma and it healed eventually.

TCP is quite a potent antiseptic and I have seen localised 'chemical burns' when patients have applied it neat .

The smell (like Dettol or Germolene) is a comforting familiar "Oh its doing something" smell

Boil up some water , add table salt , cool to tepid and use that to gently sluice
Air dry or gently pat dry with non fluffy gauze

The redness round is a rectangle so likely a plaster reaction . Cover it with a sterile gauze and tape the edges on;y so it doesn't get soggy .
Get annother photo tomorrow to compare

FannyFifer · 31/07/2022 23:02

You def need to get the gravel out. Put him in the bath the try get under the wee skin flap bits, is that gravel the darker bits?

CatSeany · 31/07/2022 23:19

It doesn't look horrendously infected to me... perhaps there is some local infection explaining the pus, but there doesn't look like any spreading redness or swelling. I would give it a good clean, just sterile water (boiled and cooled) with some cotton wool pads or something similar. Leave it uncovered if you can do so overnight without anything sticking to it.
