My son just got an electric shock.

My son is 12 and he just accidentally touched a plug socket which appears broken as it looks like it’s been on fire at some point and it has metal sticking out of one of the holes. He screamed and ran around screaming thinking he had been stung or bitten until we went to take a look. It’s in our garage and we have never ever noticed this plug socket before we were sorting out the camping stuff as we go camping soon. Will he need to go to A&E? He seams fine now there is no mark where it happened on his hand. But just since it ceme direct from a plug socket I assume it’s dangerous?

My son just got an electric shock.

I would ring 111 just to be on the safe side.

I would ring 111 and expect to be told to take him to a&e, electric shocks can disrupt heart rhythms.

Antarcticant · 26/07/2022 19:24

I agree, get it checked out, but I got a mains shock aged 13 - it jolted me across the room - it wasn't pleasant but there were no after effects.

watcherintherye · 26/07/2022 19:25

It’s still switched on! The first thing you need to do is switch it off. Can the garage sockets be switched off at the fuse box?

CheshireCat1 · 26/07/2022 19:26

It needs checking out.

watcherintherye · 26/07/2022 19:30

Meant to say, I had an electric shock in similar circumstances - accidentally touching one of the pins of a plug which wasn’t properly in the socket - at about the same age. It was a horrible feeling, but I didn’t suffer any lasting ill effects, and wasn’t taken to hospital!

PinkBump2022 · 26/07/2022 19:41

@watcherintherye Iv tried hard to turn it off and the switch will not budge at all which is probs why it was left on in the first place but Iv no idea how long it’s been like that we’ve lived here 5-6 years and never even noticed it before

You definitely need an electrician. 111 first though

Cocowatermelon · 26/07/2022 19:44

Turn it off at the fuse box. You might have to cut off power to anything else in the garage too, but that’s not a big deal. You need an electrician to come round and make it safe before you turn the power to the garage back on.
Give 111 a call for advice on where to get your son checked over.

CottonSock · 26/07/2022 19:44

I'd ring 111 and an electrician tomorrow. How could you not have noticed this. Turn off the garage electrics

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 26/07/2022 19:45

Turn it off at the fuse box/board. It's not hard. Call an electrician tomorrow. By the looks of it, you're lucky it hasn't caught fire.

Your son will be fine.

EgonSpengler2020 · 26/07/2022 19:48

He'll be fine if it was normal household electric (low voltage) is asymptomatic and has no injuries.

But do get your electrical checked out.

watcherintherye · 26/07/2022 19:48

Ah, I see. Sorry. Couldn’t understand why it was still on! Sometimes you can switch off a group of sockets at the fuse box? Otherwise I’d get an electrician to look at it asap. Hope your son’s ok. If he seems fine now, I’m pretty sure he won’t suffer any long term effects, but I have no medical expertise, so maybe ring 111 to check?

X posts with lots of people!

You probably did it already, but I would call and ask how to proceed, just in case. But I wouldn't worry too much. I got an electric shock last year. I visited a friend and was helping her unload the dishwasher. I didn't know the machine wasn't safely isolated/grounded so I was holding the door and with the other hand touched the metallic sink. I felt a horrible strong pain run through my left arm. I was in pain for several hours and didn't feel half of my hand but everything was fine. I called ER and they said that if I didn't lose consciousness or vomit I should be fine.
