DH gave too much nurofen

Hi all
DS (9m) has a temperature so asked DH to give some nurofen, great!
Baby is now fast asleep and DH just realised he gave a full syringe rather than half as he confused it for Calpol 😫 so baby has had double 😳

Baby seems fine breathing normally and it's been 3 hours.
Had no other medication today.

What should I do? Phone 111? 😭😭😭😭

Yes, phone 111.

Potatomashed · 23/07/2022 21:38

Ah I did this too. She was fine, just hold off the next dose (assuming your child has no medical conditions)

whyyyynow · 23/07/2022 21:38

He is also 50-50

He thinks he gave a full syringe but can't actually remember.. now he says he thinks it was half but can't put money on it 😭

Call 111. I'm sure he'll be fine though

dementedpixie · 23/07/2022 21:39

As long as you stay within the dosage for a 24 hour period then it'll be fine

dementedpixie · 23/07/2022 21:40

Don't give the next dose just in case then
Give calpol if required

Phone 111 regardless.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 23/07/2022 21:42

It’s below the dosage for a 24 hour period so fine.

dementedpixie · 23/07/2022 21:43

No need for 111 if they are within the 24 hour dosage

WestIsWest · 23/07/2022 21:44

GP prescribed me double dose ibuprofen for a while recently. They’d never do that with paracetamol so I’m sure he’ll be fine as it’s his only dose today. Do ring 111 if you need reassurance from a professional though.
I wouldn’t worry about it myself if I’d done it.

Fleamaker123 · 23/07/2022 21:44

I've done this with Calpol. Gave 10ml then realised as the second 5ml went down that my son had moved up to the 6+ so only needed 5ml.

I ended up taking him to A&E as it was evening and he would've fallen asleep and I couldn't check on him.

They measure the amount given over a 24 hour period so 10 ml was fine. I felt like shit though!

LottieTx · 23/07/2022 21:47

Phone 111 for your own peace of mind but she’ll be fine I’m sure. I did this with DD a while ago with calpol. We had the 6+ and the 3month+ at home. I gave her the 6+ dose accidentally instead of the dose for the 3month+.
I was panicked, 111 were great and basically said it’ll take a lot more to actually cause a problem and she’d be fine.

whyyyynow · 23/07/2022 21:49

Thanks all for the reassurance.

DH seems to think it's ok too and it's been 4hours since, so he says it's probably out of his system by now?

Told me not to bother 111 as DS has only had either 5ml or 10ml in the last 48h and we definitely won't be administering any more

But yes will probably phone just for the professional reassurance. I just don't want them to think I'm an idiot for phoning 🙈

WestIsWest · 23/07/2022 21:59

I’m sure they won’t think that and even if they do so what, it doesn’t matter. You’ll never have to speak to them again. If it means you’ll sleep better then I’d ring them.

Littlefucker · 23/07/2022 22:05

Nurofen is hard to overdose on as opposed to Paracetamol which is much more serious. My ex did exactly the same with Nurofen, phoned 111 and they said don’t worry but don’t give any more for 24hrs.

Silverbirch2 · 23/07/2022 22:39

My dd drank paracetamol- long story! We took her to A&e and she was absolutely fine - they did do bloods. I was a crying wreck though!

Somuchgoo · 24/07/2022 00:20

I wouldn't worry about it with one dose for ibuprofen. Paracetamol you need to be more careful with, but I think they make the bottles to still be safe if a child swigs the lot. I'd probably check 111 for calpol, more because I feel i should rather than concern. Probably wouldnt bother for ibuprofen personally.

Incidentally I have a friend who misunderstood the first for ibuprofen tablets and took double doses every time she used them for many years.

Somuchgoo · 24/07/2022 00:29

Incidentally, in reading this and then looking online, it turns out I've been technically overdosing my toddler! By age she should be on 7.5ml calpol, but she's small and her dose 'should' be 6ml. And for ibuprofen, by age 5ml, but by weight 4ml.

whyyyynow · 24/07/2022 08:13

Thanks everyone I phoned and they said someone will get In touch .. but it got to 1am and no call. So I called back to tell them not to worry about calling anymore. Baby was fine and slept well, happy and full of energy this morning 😃. Thank you all for the reassurance. I really panicked last night 😅

You really really do not need to worry about double dose on anything really. It's never enough to overdose.
I wouldn't ever ring 111 for something so trivial, especially when others have said that it's not an issue. The service is so busy at the moment and unnecessary calls are blocking the system for those who really need it.

Jules912 · 24/07/2022 10:47

DH did this with Calpol when DD moved onto the 6+ one. Was told one double dose was nothing to worry about but skip the next dose.

I’d hardly call it a trivial or unnecessary call, especially in a baby. It’s not OP’s fault that our NHS is broken and they’re busy.
