Splinter

My toddler has a splinter in his foot, he will not let me touch it to try and remove (even when asleep - I've been kicked in the face several times!).

Any tips to remove it? I don't want it to get infected and is looking a little red.

Would magnesium sulphate (drawing ointment) work?

Let him have a good soak/play in the bath, it may loosen it enough. Then when he's fast asleep a gentle squeeze and grab it with tweezers.

Thank you.

I'll give it a whirl later!

This happened with my DD and she wouldn't let me near her with tweezers. A quick Google suggested warm salt water. She agreed to soak her foot in it for about 10 minutes, it seemed to bring the splinter to the surface and I was then able to remove it really easily.

Definitely soak it. My DS4 had four splinters for in his foot from running on a deck it took a few days as they were deep but I made him have a bath every night and shower every morning and just gave them a gentle squeeze after each bath then after 3 days I got them all out in one go. I also used magnesium paste after the shower to try to help shift them. Good luck!

sugar soap paste under a plaster overnight then it should pop out in the morning.

I’m a podiatrist. We LOVE removing splinters,
and are generally pretty good at it. My children are very happy having me poke their feet with a scalpel (don’t try to DIY that, though!!).

So, if you’re really stuck, phone around some local clinics.

Get a calpol syringe, put it over the splinter and get the syringe to suck it out. Works every time.

Sorry for the delayed response!

Thanks for all of the tips, it's out!

I let it soak in the bath, gave a little squeeze and some came out, put some magnesium paste on and a plaster overnight. That stuff if magic. It wasn't there in the morning!
