1 year old vomiting since head injury

Hello,

My one year old had a fall on Thursday evening, and we went to a&e. Apart from a horrid bump and bruising, they were happy for us to go home.

Since Thursday, she has been sick on Friday evening, Saturday evening and tonight. They happen around the same sort of time (bedtime) after I have fed her (breastfeed).

Could this be due to the head injury?

She also has a terrible cough at the moment, and she seems to be having a coughing fit before her vomits, so this is why I am questioning it.

I am calling her GP in the morning, but unsure what others thought? Do you think it could be from the head injury or am I just being paranoid?

How is she the rest of the time?

vroom321 · 17/07/2022 23:33

I'd call 111. They will
Probably send you to A&E but better to be safe?

It sounds a bit delayed to be due to the head injury, but I would want to see a GP tomorrow to check that out anyway. Normally if you ring early morning at opening and stress it’s a baby with a head injury they should try to fit you in.

Could she have Covid? The cough plus vomiting would make me think it was possible — my DD (though older) had vomiting and a cough with Covid as her main symptoms.

I'd be going back to A&E if they're young enough to still be BF.

Hiddenvoice · 17/07/2022 23:39

Personally I would phone 111 and inform them of head injury and the sickness. Could she be being sick because of the cough? I would phone and also for their advice just to be on the safe side!

She is absolutely fine apart from being a little miserable due to her cough/cold. But she's playing etc as usual. She's not drowsy or sleeping more than usual.

I don't want to panic and take her straight to a&e now; but I just don't know! If she wasn't poorly on top of all this then maybe I'd be a little more concerned; but then I don't know if her illness is masking anything either.

@theclangersarecoming if she was vomiting throughout the day then perhaps but it's just one time at bedtime!? It's very odd.

I lay her down after I feed her then it's just a random vomit!

We've all had tonsillitis and she now has a horrid cough with a temp on and off.

I wouldn't be worried about the head injury given the lack of other symptoms and because shes not getting any worse.

bloodywhitecat · 17/07/2022 23:46

I would assume it is the coughing while laying down with a full stomach but if I was at all concerned I would give 111 a call.

quietnightmare · 17/07/2022 23:46

A&E now. At minimum call 111

A&E now. At minimum call 111

Why?

weewill · 17/07/2022 23:51

@bloodywhitecat this was my thought too

@quietnightmare oh god really?

I'm surprised you were not told to look out for vomiting when you were seen at A&E as it's one of the signs of concussion. I would be inclined to call 111 now.

Saragossa · 17/07/2022 23:55

Call 111, they'll probably want her to see a GP. Just to be safe.

DiscoBadgers · 17/07/2022 23:55

Oh don’t be silly @quietnightmare. OP, you don’t need to rush to A&E now if she’s otherwise well, has a plausible explanation for the vomiting, didn’t vomit for the first 24 hours after the head injury and has already been seen by a doctor.

For peace of mind, call 111 but as @bloodywhitecat says, it’s almost certainly the effect of coughing whilst lying down having just fed. Please do make it clear to 111 that there was no vomiting in the first 24h after the head injury.

weewill · 17/07/2022 23:56

@parenthood1989 they asked me if she had been sick when I was there, I said no. The Dr said if she had been sick more than three times in a short space of time after the fall then they would be concerned.

He didn't say about sick going home though.

Vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, behaviour changes etc all symptoms of concussion.

Any raised infra cranial pressure would cause these. Probably worse on waking

OP has said other than the evening vomiting alll is well. I think far more likely coughing on a full tummy is to blame than any cerebral event
