Tips on giving antibiotics to a 9 month old?

Amoxicillin. He just spit it out :( tried via syringe and spoon. He is 9 months, does anyone have any tips? I'm so worried as it's really important that he takes it. I tasted it and it's really sweet but he did not like it at all

does he like yoghurtor fromage frais? Mine would take medicine mixed with these.

everybodystalking · 17/07/2022 16:43

if he still has milk then putting the medicine in then offering a drink of milk or apple juice will wash it down quickly.

Try to be very very supernaturally calm and treat it like any other foods.....they pick up on stress....you may find that he prefers a spoon if that's the usual way he is fed

Second the fromage fraud option. My daughter is now 18m and it's still how we sneak meds in if she needs them!

I currently have a 6 month old on antibiotics. Syringe in the back of the cheek whilst lying down and then massge neck to make them swallow. Just like a cat! 😂

I'm guessing 'fromage fraud' is a typo, but it's very fitting Grin

When using a syringe I find it helps to put it at the side of the mouth, near the back, and only put in tiny amounts at a time?

It's a shame they're not old enough to bribe with chocolate like I do with my four year old

FindingANewLifePlan · 19/07/2022 11:04

Also, does he take a dummy/bottle?

We used to put the medicine in the teat of a bottle and give it before a meal at that age, more likely to get it down when they're hungry.

FindingANewLifePlan · 19/07/2022 11:05

Also just read a tip that cooling their mouth with an ice pop first helps with the taste, so could try that Smile would probably go down well in this weather.

Sorry for all the posts, good luck!

blowing gently in their faces often works
squirt some in, blow - they should swallow I don’t give enough to spit out direct into cheek/gum sometimes if baby is wriggly wrapping in a thin sheet helps if you’re on your own. Amoxicillin is meant to be banana flavour but it’s not and disgusting so the kids tell me, pen v is worse. Good luck, you’ll get there it is hard work but having something nice afterwards will help

bluegardenflowers · 19/07/2022 11:09

If all else fails, swaddle him in a blanket so his arms can't reach his mouth and, using a syringe, put the tip into his cheek and holding his chin shut, squirt small amounts into his cheek. He can't spit it out as you keep his mouth shut and can't grab the syringe. May need two people initially until you get the hang of it. It won't choke him as its into his cheek and his swallow reflex has time to operate. Def not down the back of his throat

bluegardenflowers · 19/07/2022 11:10

The chemist may be able to supply a different flavour, but they all taste vile and do little to disguise the taste. would need a new prescription too.

bellinisurge · 19/07/2022 11:11

I put a dose in milk with one of those swirly plastic straws. Not saying she didn't get wise to it but she had a fun vs yuch! battle which meant at least some got in

RiceRiceBaby16 · 19/07/2022 15:43

Thank You all xx
Had to go with the cruel to be kind method. DP held him with head tilted back a bit as I put the abx in his cheek then held him nose so he swallows :( managed that in 3 goes, got the whole dose in. Of course he was very upset, but he did get over it in just a few minutes luckily.

Great idea regarding the blowing. Will try that too. Holding nose did work but there was such panic in his eyes as I did it Sad parenthood eh?

This!

bluegardenflowers · 19/07/2022 16:55

You don't need to hold the nose that's pretty unpleasant, just cup the chin so that he can't open his mouth. He'll swallow then if you hold it closed long enough. Holding the nose may make him inhale it into his lungs.

bluegardenflowers · 19/07/2022 16:58

No one actually said hold the nose anyway, so don't make it harder on yourselves than it already is.
