Is this tomato allergy?

10month old developed small, warm red patch under chin after eating tomatoes this evening (other food has been eaten in regular meals with no issue). She has had tomatoes before but I don’t know how much she actually ate of them and these tomatoes were on the under-ripe side so possibly more acidic??? The red patch was hotter than the rest of the skin and slight hive-like bumps in the middle on close inspection. Baby is fine in herself and playing before bed. It’s not as hot now and I think it’s getting smaller. DH is confident it doesnt look like any of the concerning rashes from NHS website.

Does it look similar to tomato allergies on other children?

Is this tomato allergy?

It's very common for young children to have that kind of reaction to tomatoes - doesn't mean it's a full on allergy, just that the skin is sensitive to the acidity.

I thought that may be the case. Thanks for the response.

Since I posted I remembered she’s had tomato based sauces quite a few times but I did think it was notable to state these tomatoes were on the under-ripe side. I’ll give it a few days and see if it crops up again.

My DS gets this with acidic things. If he has had tomato ketchup on his face he will have this for a few hours afterwards. Be sure to keep a wipe handy to wipe it off as soon as you see it on there.

Sorry to hijack your thread! But my baby has had a reaction exactly like this to eggs. Fine mixed in a muffin but eating boiled egg she was scratching her neck, and reacting as above. Could it be an allergy?

My son also had this and doctor advised to stay away from eggs until he was 1 years old. Then re introduce them then.

This could well be a 'proper' egg allergy - I would get your baby tested and in the meantime stay away from eggs in their pure form at least - sounds like she can tolerate egg in cake etc.

My daughter had an egg allergy but did grow out of it.

@Wargghhhh oh no! Thanks for the info. What age did your child grow out of it?

Nstarr · 16/07/2022 09:39

@PinkButtercups thanks for replying, how was it after 1 years old?

Nstarr · 16/07/2022 09:40

@ChorserSaucer hope yours is too. x

I'm not sure tbh, she was quite young, started off with dairy allergy then egg then peanut. Dairy she grew out of first then egg I'd say maybe she was 6 or 7 something like that? Egg is the one that a lot of kids grow out of so you may just be lucky with that.

Nstarr · 16/07/2022 13:33

@Wargghhhh thanks for that. Dairy is fine, I'll go carefully with nuts.

My son used to get this as a baby. Absolutely fine with them now (8yo)

My DD used to have red rashes / blisters around her mouth / chin whenever she ate anything red!
It looked v painful but luckily was neither painful or itchy.
She had to use a barrier cream before she ate!
When I took her to the drs he googled Confusedand ended up on a website'tomatoes are evil'
When she was due to be a bridesmaid, for the couple of weeks before we made sure she had no 'red' foods so she wouldn't get a reaction!
She grew out of it by 5/6!
