Should I be worried about toddler DD? Reading about leukaemia and a bit worried

Hi,

Im not sure if this is just me having read something and now being worried or there’s more to it, but I’m a bit worried about how ill my DD has been. She’s 2 1/2 and for the last 18 months she has had every bug going - 3 rounds of tonsillitis, chicken pox, an unspecified viral rash, lots and lots of coughs, colds, fevers etc

I took her to the doctor who said basically, all toddlers of this age are getting this ill because they didn’t have the opportunity in their first year to build up an immune system. However, she has recently been complaining of sore inner elbows and knees and today has been sent home from nursery again with a temp of 40. Her most recent illness was a cough which has been ongoing for months at nighttime, the doctor said to try a ventolin inhaler before bed which has worked.

im now a bit worried about the symptoms of ongoing episodes of fever, illness, runny noses which won’t shift, but now leg and arm pain being potential symptoms for childhood leukemia. She seems well enough in herself, eating and drinking as normal, wet nappies, no excessive bruising, tiredness or lethargy.

What should i do from here - does this sound like standard covid baby illness or would you push for a referral for something more?

im not really an anxious person but something about an ill child has pushed something in me!

She sounds exactly like my DD who is 33 months. I do think they are fine but I get jumpy as we have friends with a child of same age with a brain tumour so can quite easily convince myself otherwise.
DD also has the inhaler btw and the constant temps. I do think the GP is right.

every toddler and even adult is like this at the moment. You forget we have been housebound for two years due to a pandemic and don’t have strong immune systems which we would normally have from mingling with peers in those 2 years. Every toddler is like that at the moment and I know many adults who have also suffered too

There is a virus thing going round causing sore knees and elbows it's weird. But I would mention it to the gp and say you are concerned about leukemia. Don't be afraid to tell them what you are afraid of. They can then tell you why they aren't concerned or ask for extra tests. Voice the fear with them and they can help.

I feel for you! My DS was recently in A&E having urgent bloods for leukaemia which fortunately came back absolutely fine but I was told by the brilliant doctor at the time that leukaemia particularly comes on hard and fast and that deterioration is rapid. You would know within days to weeks if your child had blood cancer because they would be desperately unwell. As horrifying as this is it was reassuring as my DS was bouncing around happily on the ward at the time. Multiple infections is the norm at the moment sadly and has hit both my children hard. The pandemic has a lot to do with it. Sending a hand hold.

Ah you’re all amazing, thanks so much for this, this is so reassuring!

@chilledbubble i had no idea there is a weird virus doing the rounds causing this, do you have any further info at all as I’ve googled and can’t see anything?

@Foreverbaffled so sorry to hear about your DS, I am really glad that he’s ok and thanks for your sympathy

Hi,

I went to the GP and explained my concerns (the extended periods of illness) and she was amazing, took it really seriously and said it was probably childhood illness but she would refer us for bloods just in case. The blood screening came back totally clear and all fine, so it looks like it was just a bad run of illness. She’s nearly 3 now and hasn’t been ill for a while so they do come out the other side!

a good multivitamin helped as well I think, but don’t be afraid to ask the GP if you want further tests etc done but it’s probably nothing. Hope he feels better soon

Thank you. It’s such a worry isn’t it. I’m so scared. But I’m glad your little one was all good. What a relief 😀 xxx
