One year old in hospital with infection AGAIN

My one year old had an undiagnosed throat infection which ended up in high temperature and febrile seizures in hospital. They said it was probably something dirty he'd eaten.
He's back in again this week with another high temperature and I'm certain the diagnosis will be the same.
What can I do to make sure he's not coming into contact with contaminates?
Is my house not clean enough?
We do struggle to have it sparkling, but its not that bad.
What am I doing wrong? What can I do to protect him? Devastated.

Please don't blame yourself, take a breath and remember you are doing fine.
Your child is loved and looked after, when he needed help you got it for him.

Unless your house is an unholy midden it's not the reason.
My dd had reoccurring temperatures and infections to the point she was investigated for leukemia. She simply grew out of it, wasn't anything we could do except look after her and wait.

I hope your little one feels alot better soon.
You are doing what you need, just be with your child and dont engage is self blaming thoughts, you need your energy.

I really doubt it was something dirty unless your home is filthy (as in dog poo in the corner filthy). Much more likely to be a childhood bug or virus, and that the last one never cleared up properly so has come back. Don’t stress. Lots of children get febrile seizures, it’s not your fault.

Also, how long ago was the first infection? Is it possible the infection wasn't totally eradicated?

LizzieSiddal · 05/07/2022 20:02

Please don’t blame yourself, my 18 month old granddaughter was blue lighted to hospital on Monday, with v high temp and breathing issues, thankfully it is “just a viral infection”, 2 other babies were in for the same thing and my 2 week old niece who lives miles away was also rushed to hospital with the same thing.
The hospital staff said it’s very unusual to have this many infections during summer time so there’s definitely something very strange going on!

Granddaughter's nursery have just said there is a case of scarlet fever too!

When my son was one we were in hospital for a week due to a viral infection. Fast forward five years and I've spent the weekend in hospital with his one year old sister. Also viral infection. It can be really scary OP but I honestly very much doubt it's anything you've done or not done. There's so many bugs going around at the moment. Sending love and hope your boy feels better soon x

My child was hospitalised with a virus every year for her first six years. Some kids just struggle to fight things off.

thusela · 05/07/2022 22:13

They said its a viral infection. No antibiotics as we had last time as that was a throat infection, and this time its viral.
But I still feel like it was somehow my fault. Did he get it from our home?
How do we stop this. Now he's had some febrile seizures when having a temperature, he is now susceptible to them every time he has a fever. Its terrifying that there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to reduce the likelihood of him catching something.

There isn't anything you can do.
I am sorry to be blunt but that is what you need to understand.
Blaming yourself, trying to form plans to stop it happening etc are pointless wastes of energy and will actually make your anxiety over this worse.

I really can relate when you love your child and want to control the world to stop it hurting them. But it isn't possible.
I would gently suggest that when you are both home and have had some sleep etc you work on accepting the world and it's viruses are beyond your remit. Your part of this is loving your child and getting help if needed (which is exactly what you did).

Maybe read up about the seizures, how to manage them, when it's a problem to get yourself as prepared as you can be.

When my daughter was repeatedly I'll, I was so anxious and wanted to pull her from nursery.
The consultant told me this was counter productive, she needed to get all the illnesses and her body needed to learn to cope.
She actually told me to keep 'throwing her back in!'.

I really hope you are both feeling better this morning, I am sending you alot of sympathy.

Who told you it was probably something dirty he had eaten? Is it possible he had picked something up from garden/park rather than your house if it was something he had eaten?

NewYorkPleasecake · 06/07/2022 18:59

I have never, ever heard of a throat infection being caused by something someone has eaten!!!

For what it's worth when I was in hospital last weekend with 1yo DD who had a suspected throat /chest infection they did ask me if she could have eaten anything the shouldn't have, ie small toys etc. So there might be something in it!? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Unless they just meant that could have caused the chesty coughing? Who knows.
