To go on holiday or not

We haven't been on holiday for 3 years, first we bought a house and then our holiday was cancelled with covid and we never rebooked it. So DS plus hubby and I have been really looking forward to this. It's nothing fancy but it did cost £600, we're driving 2hrs to take a 3hr ferry journey and go across the water still within the UK.

DS7 woke up this morning with stuffy nose and heavy eyes 🙈 we covid tested him and it was negative so we were all set to still go. This evening though his temperature is slowly climbing. He says nothing hurts but his throat feels "slimy" (his description) and his nose is pouring snot.

Would you still go? He still wants to go. Adults still want to go. But I know I'm going to be worried sick that a) people will think he's got covid like ferry staff etc. B) that he'll be miserable on the travelling. I know he'll be fine once we arrive at accommodation and can lie down/chill out but the 5/6hrs journey I don't want to make him miserable. Yes I have anxiety, and it's causing an inability to make a decision without feeling like I'm doing the wrong thing.

Go! Have fun! Bring Calpol.

SheepingStandingUp · 02/07/2022 18:14

I mean I'm not sure how full a kid with a raging fever is going to be. Have you given calpol? Is it bringing it down? How old is he?

If you’re coming to Guernsey, please keep testing just in case. Lots of cases here now. And health insurance is needed for doctors/hospital.

So tricky to know, he might start feeling better really quickly. My DD7 is unwell, started yesterday with a croaky throat. She has been on the couch all day and not eating much. She wouldn’t manage a 3 hour ferry right now. But I know how quickly they can feel better.

You’re in a difficult position. Such bad timing.

When do you travel?

chipsandpeas · 02/07/2022 18:23

id go, keep him masked up and try and keep him away from people on the ferry

chipsandpeas · 02/07/2022 18:23

it might not be covid, it could be a cold, hayfever etc

SausageAndCash · 02/07/2022 18:26

Yes, dose up and go.

DasGirl · 02/07/2022 18:27

I'd still go. Kids can bounce back very quickly. If it's not covid he might be right as rain in couple days.

If it is covid loads of people seem to have it at moment anyway. And he'll probably feel better in day or 2.

Your still in uk, keep him outside on the ferry. just go and enjoy your holiday

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/07/2022 18:27

Definitely dose up and go

converseandjeans · 02/07/2022 18:29

I would go if you have tested him & it's a heavy cold. He will be better with some fresh air and a few quiet days.

Thank you all for responses, most seem in favour of us still going. For those who asked - he's 7, he's in decent form but tired and heavy eyes, still eating some and drinking plenty. I wouldn't call it a "raging fever" it's hovering around 37.9/38, I've just given nurofen so I'll see how it takes affect, if it lowers it or gives him a little more energy.

We've booked a room on the ferry but also booked dinner so I'm assuming we'll have to be around people for that, I've actually never been on the ferry can you choose to have your meal sent to your room?
