Ringworm

Hi, my daughter has what looks like ringworm on her leg, does anyone know if I can take her to the pharmacy for treatment over the counter or does she need to be seen by our GP? Our GP is closed until Monday now and she has her school residential on weds.

I took mine to a pharmacy and got some cream for it. I can't remember what it was called though.

Wouldloveanother · 01/07/2022 23:54

We used a pharmacy, they gave her daktarin I believe.

Creameggs223 · 01/07/2022 23:55

Same I took mine pharmacy and got cream it worked pretty quickly aswell.

Zapx · 02/07/2022 00:00

Daktarin. If they try to give you canesten refuse it, not nearly as good imo. Pharmacist should have Daktarin in.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/07/2022 00:03

Yes I went to pharmacy. DD had it in her head. I had to pick her up from school and they wouldn't let her back until it was sorted

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/07/2022 00:04

On her head not in her head

Moonchild18 · 02/07/2022 00:10

Thanks all, I'll pop to the pharmacy with her tomorrow. Fingers crossed it clears up quickly!

It can spread like anything, so keep using the cream even if it looks like its getting better. Also you can cover individual rings with a plaster to stop it spreading around the body or to anyone else.

Ah, she has an allergy to plasters, but good to know if the rest of us catch it, thank you

Moonchild18 · 02/07/2022 22:42

We have some Daktarin now but it could also be discoid dermatitis. I had completely forgotten she used to suffer with this on her legs when she was a toddler caused by an allergy to our cheap leather sofa, once we got rid of the sofa it went so I've not even thought about it since. No one else in the house has this on them and she says it's been there a week already so I would assume someone else would have caught it by now if it was ringworm, I know when I was younger if me or my brother had it, the other almost certainly caught it too. I will see how she goes with the daktarin to be on the safe side but if it doesn't clear up or gets worse I'll book an appointment with the GP, she used to see the dermatologist for the dermatitis, although this is just the 1 small patch on her leg.

Moonchild18 · 18/07/2022 22:00

So the original patch has cleared up but now its spread and I can't get an appointment with the doctors 🤦‍♀️ and the pharmacist just gives us the daktarin. It seems to start getting better then worse again, not quite sure if it is ringworm, does anyone have any advice? 🤷‍♀️

Looks like rosalea?

Looks like rosalea?

I wasn't sure what that is so I've just googled it, she only has this on her thigh, nothing anywhere else. I think Rosalea eventually spreads elsewhere over a few days? But she's had this weeks 🤷‍♀️

Wouldloveanother · 18/07/2022 22:24

Have you continued to use the daktarin after it clears up? You have to keep using it for a while after it clears to prevent it coming back. It looks like a ‘scaly’ rash rather than blisters, is that right? I would see if your GP accepts photos for opinions (ours does online), otherwise call tomorrow and don’t take no for an answer as it looks a little sore.

dementedpixie · 18/07/2022 22:27

Ringworm usually has a ring around a clear patch of skin. Not sure that's what it is

dementedpixie · 18/07/2022 22:29

Maybe discoid eczema

We've been using it twice daily as recommended by the pharmacist, only the first initial patch cleared up but the teeny tiny spots that was there at the time continued growing so I've kept up with the daktarin. It's in an awkward place at the back of her thigh so I'm wondering if the heat and sitting on it all day at school has become the perfect breading ground for it, she has an allergy to plasters so we've only been able to cover it up with shorts. It looks more scaly now but it started off with blisters, if you look closely you can see more tiny blisters forming. Some nights she will say it's itchy but other then that it doesn't bother her but it looks sore to me also.

I didn't think to ask about the photos, they used to do the Livi online thing during the pandemic but they've recently stopped it, I preferred that we could always get an appointment and just needed to send them a video or photo through. I'll ask about the photos in morning

Moonchild18 · 25/07/2022 22:25

So does this look better or worse? I'll post a pic of what it looked like last Thursday and what it looks like today. I managed to speak to the GP over the phone and sent him a pic last thurs. he prescribed Canestan and also some eye drops for her eye as she woke up with it swollen and sore, so it's possible she has scratched at her leg then touched her eye. I think it looks worse, he didn't say how long to try the cream for but I feel like it's not actually doing anything besides making it dry. Right pic is what it looks like now

Wouldloveanother · 25/07/2022 22:29

That looks a bit worse in my opinion. Can you afford to take her to a private dermatologist? The GP sounds useless.

I can have a look and see how much they are, I'm not sure if we can afford it if it's too expensive though 😔

Moonchild18 · 25/07/2022 22:46

I have 2 other DC, one of which also shares a room with her and neither have caught it nor have me or dad, which makes me question if it was even ringworm to begin with, when i was younger i remember how contagious it was, if one of us caught it then our siblings always ended up with it also.

When she was a toddler she used to get dermatitis that took forever to heal and one was a large circle patch on her leg, it didn't look quite like this though 🤷‍♀️ She was under a dermatologist then, I wonder if we can get another referral based on her previous history with dermatitis. I feel so bad for her, she's been invited to a hot tub party at weekend and she won't be able to go in 😔

Moonchild18 · 28/07/2022 14:25

Just to update, I've spoken with a different GP who has agreed it doesn't seem to he fungal, he's thinking more towards the dermatitis/excema she used to have when she was younger. He's prescribing a steroid cream and some more moisturiser and then review in 6 weeks.

Wouldloveanother · 29/07/2022 23:45

Good to hear they’re trying something else, let us know how she gets on 😊

Moonchild18 · 31/07/2022 23:03

It's almost gone, even just 1 day of using the epiderm without the fungal cream and it had improved massively and now its barely visible. We've been unable to get hold of the steroid cream, due to some manufacturer issue but the GP has written an alternative to collect tomorrow, however I don't think she will need it now, but I'll collect just incase it comes back.

Moonchild18 · 01/08/2022 18:19

Nvm I jinxed it, it's back today after almost being fully gone for 3 days. So we'll try the steroid cream
