Sending child to nursery with a UTI

Hi all. My DD (18 months) currently has a UTI, diagnosed 2 days ago, so I’ve taken the Monday and Tuesday off work to look after her. Her last dose of antibiotics is tomorrow morning.
She’s still quite warm and is mostly refusing to eat, and I was wondering if it’s likely that nursery would send her home.
I really don’t want to have to take another day off, and I can’t leave work in the middle of the day.
Anyone else been in a similar situation and have some advice?

It's awful when they're sick, and I'm perfectly happy to send in a snotty child who's well in themselves, but I think if she's warm and not eating I would want mine at home. With a UTI I'd also want to be keeping an eye just in case she got worse again (hopefully not if the antibiotics are doing their thing).

If she's not eating and a bit warm she still sounds unwell, so I wouldn't want to send her to nursery. Maybe her other parent could take their turn to do the sick child care?

Despite that, she’s perfectly happy. Like yesterday and the couple of days before you could tell she was ill, but she’s back to her smiley self. Unfortunately my wife can’t take tomorrow (or any of the week) off. We’re both teachers, and time off is a big deal. My employers are particularly difficult about it.

If she's got a temp she shouldn't be in nursery. And if she's unwell enough to be off her food, she shouldn't be in nursery.

Unfortunately, having kids means frequent days off work for illness, you're going to have to find a way to make that work for the next ten years I'm afraid.

No way would I send a child in with a UTI. I used to get them and I remember how awful I felt. No matter how happy you think she appears, if she’s running a temperature and still refusing to eat then she’s still too poorly for school.

Geordielass1987 · 28/06/2022 11:07

Bless her, whenever I have a UTI I feel really really poorly. I’d keep her home, I know it’s hard but I’m a grown woman and feel terrible with a UTI. I wouldn’t want to be sent somewhere else I’d want my home.

Moj1t0 · 28/06/2022 11:07

This is v tricky and I sympathise. I wouldn't send her in if she's still warm and not eating, though. That said, if she's got another day of the antibiotics maybe she'll be better by tomorrow.

Lovemylittlebear · 28/06/2022 11:09

My daughter ended up with sepsis from a UTI and then had very frequent bouts with ongoing montiorimg etc. so nope I wouldn’t unless I knew she wasn’t in pain, the antibiotics were the right one from the strain of bacteria she has and that the nursery staff can be trusted to monitor input and output and ring if they are at all concerned x

Having had UTIs myself, no. She might feel okay in the comfort of her own home, but will get exhausted in nursery and will set her back several days. UTIs are horrible.

If her last dose is tomorrow, she should be better by now and these last few doses just making sure it’s completely gone.

Please take her back to the GP, it sounds like she needs different antibiotics.

Kittykat93 · 28/06/2022 11:09

I often cant work when I have a UTI as I feel awful so no I wouldn't be sending an 18 month old into nursery with one. Especially as she is showing signs of feeling poorly.

TheFairyCaravan · 28/06/2022 11:10

No, you absolutely should not send her to nursery atm. She’s unwell so it’s not fair to her or the nursery staff.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/06/2022 11:12

I get that you are both teachers and time off is hard, but you've done two days. She needs to do the next two.

If the little one still has a temperature after a round of ABs then Nursery won't keep her, and she probably could do with a follow up check with the doctor.

SheWoreYellow · 28/06/2022 11:12

If the antibiotics are working then she should be fine to go in. My concern would be that she still has a temperature and isn’t eating, so they aren’t working.
What is her temperature?
If it’s normal and she starts eating then I would send her in. If not you need to take her back to the GP.

I've been in hospital twice with sepsis that started from a uti and went to my kidneys. That was after 3 days of antibiotics. If she's still warm and off her food, the infection is still there and running around nursery, possibly not drinking enough, getting hot and tired is not going to be good for her.

I was also smiling and joking when I was in hospital!

That would be absolutely a hard pass from me. I understand taking time off is hard but that's what supply staff are for.
