Propranolol side effects

My 8 year old DD is due to start propranolol for hemiplegic migraines. I was told it will reduce her heart rate and may cause dizziness.
What other side effects should I be on the lookout for?
Just in case it's needed, she's between the 9th and 25th centiles for height and weight, shes also on omeprazole for gastro oesophagal reflux disease, is being investigated for hypermobility/EDS (I have EDS) and has severe psoriasis all over her body.
The doctor knows all of this of course but the only side effect she mentioned was dizziness whereas Google is telling a very different story. So I was hoping someone here knows a bit more about it rather than the scary side of Google.

I'm not 8 years old so not certain if that makes a difference to the experiences you are asking for but I do take one propanalol daily to help with my morning anxiety. If I take three over the day (which is what I'm actually prescribed) then my limbs start feeling heavy and it physically slows me down so I only ever take a full dosage if I'm having a bad day.

Thank you that's good to know. She's prescribed 1 at night for a week, then one morning and night going forward. I'll look out for heaviness in her limbs..

My dd also took propranolol for migraines although she was a little older, about 14. The only real side effect she had was she often felt a bit light headed when standing or getting up too quickly.

I was quite concerned about her taking them but they made such a difference to her and really reduce both the number and severity of her migraines. The aim was to break the cycle, which they did and she came off them gradually with no issues either. Good luck Smile

Thank you. That's what im hoping for DD. She has very severe migraines that we've been keeping a diary of for the last few months. She loses feeling on her left side when they happen so a bit of light-headedness has to be better than that surely.

I'm not a child but I've never had a side effect taking them.

HerRoyalHappiness · 27/06/2022 20:36

That's fantastic. Hopefully DD won't. I just want to be prepared in case she does then I can explain to her what's causing it and stop the medication if necessary

I've taken them off and on for ten years for essential tremor and migraines. When I first started taking them they made me so tired, falling asleep at 6/7pm and awake at 1/2am. Took a few months and a switch to slow release for my sleep to regulate. Fingers crossed this doesn't happen for your dd.

I never by dizzy with them as such, though after a few months on them they do lower my heart too much so need to have a break, then start again (I actually collapsed the first time I took a 10mg dose, turns out I have low bp anyways, been very careful with checking it first since then). She may well get palpitations as the dose is wearing off, which might be a bit odd for her if she's never experienced it before. regulate

best of luck, it can be an amazing med for migraines.

The most important thing to look out for is wheeze/tight chest. If she's never had any asthma type problems then it's very unlikely, but if she did get these she'd need to stop the propranolol straight away.

HerRoyalHappiness · 27/06/2022 20:58

Thank you both. Her BP has always been normal when we've been in hospital with her. Which is a lot. (She's known for getting various infections all at the same time. She once had gastro, a chest infection, UTI, ear infection, tonsillitis and the flu all at once and wasn't eating or drinking, no wonder) and she's never had asthma although there is a family history of it so I'll keep a close eye on that.
