Hi i have started to see an unusual behaviour in my 2 year old. Periodically throughout the day but mostly in the morning he lies face down on the floor, puts his hands under his pelvic area and head out to the side and starts twitching. His legs often jerk and he starts dribbling on the floor. He can move his eyes to follow a finger but doesnt respond when called. This happens for about a minute until i go and lift him up then he will take a few steps then lie himself down and do it again and start the jerking and body twitching. I will he mentioning this to his health professional and have taken some videos to try and explain it. Has anyone elses child done similar? Im not sure if it is an actual seizure as he puts himself in the position but the dribbling and stiffening off the body when i try to lift him has me a bit worried. Could it be behavioural or has anyones child done similar? Has anyone noticed similar in any medical conditions such as epilipsey?

Um. How to put this delicately. It sounds more likely to be self gratification.

At two years old? Come off it.

Yep, it happens in toddlers. I've seen a number of toddlers referred as possible fits, where the footage from the parents made it pretty apparent what was going on.

I would still go and see your GP. But wanted you to know that it can be non worrying reasons.

It sounds like self gratification. It’s actually reasonably common in toddlers (a young relative used to do it, and I’ve seen it frequently in my line of work). It’s not a sexual thing at that age, just it feels nice. Always a good idea to see your GP if it’s concerning you though. They do tend to refer on to paediatrics/paediatric neurology if they aren’t sure, and no one ever minds seeing a child to rule something out.
