21 month old has fractured tibea on holiday! Advice needed.

My poor 21 month old daughter tripped and landed awkwardly two days ago, after not being able to put any weight on it and a trip to hospital, it transpires she has a hairline fracture and her lower leg is in a resin cast! We are on holiday for another five days and I was wondering if anyone had any advice from protecting the cast from sand and water (we're not bathing her or putting her in the sea/pool but we're away with family and don't think it's fair for her to be in the small hotel room all day. We're in south of france, so any help/advice of products we could buy to protect it would be fantastic. She's coping amazingly well but just feel so sorry for her as she can't join in playing with her cousins. Thanks so much in advance for your help.

protection of cast - nylon stockings
will not stop all sand but will stop most and is breathable enough in watm weather.

and: call your insurance company in case you can't travel. airlines can be (justified) cautious about allowing people with fresh cast to fly.

Kitchen wrap/cling film ? Not sure what it's called in english but the thin plastic wrap that you use to protect food. Obviously it's not breathable so can't leave it on too long but should do the trick for a couple of hours at the beach, and this way she can play in the sand ?

Limbo products are fabulous.
I think they’re available on Amazon so could you get one delivered to your hotel from Amazon.fr?

ItsSnowJokes · 26/06/2022 16:11

Sand and casts do not mix at all. It can rub the skin raw and get infected. You can get cast protectors called limbos which are fab, but I don't know if where you are will sell them as its normally online. I would order one online so its waiting for you at home. Then they will be able to have a bath and play with sand. Without one you are taking a big risk.

Hope it heals soon, our daughter when she was 2 broke her leg and was in plaster for 7 weeks.

You really need to check if the airline will let her fly without having an open cast due to the risk of DVT (can normally be done after 4 or 5 days) it's basically acast that has had the front cut off and will probably need replacing with a normal one after the flight

Apandemicyousay · 26/06/2022 22:50

In a toddler the flight/cast issue isn’t DVT but the risk of compartment syndrome (swelling causing compression). my daughter had a fractured arm days before a summer hols, and rule was no flight within 48 hrs and they put on a ‘back slab’ which isn’t quite a full cast and fine for flying. Suggest contact clinic saying you need a cast suitable for flying and the clinic will ‘split it’ for travel if needed.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/06/2022 11:30

Get a limbo cover on Amazon prime. And you will need the plaster splitting if you are flying.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/06/2022 11:31

@Hoardasurass it's not so
Much the risk of a DVT in children. It's the risk of compartment syndrome. Where the soft tissue swell up with nowhere to go. You really don't want to get it!

Thanks everyone for all your helpful replies! We've managed to find a plastic protector from the pharmacy to put on near sand/water and we're now getting the train back, rather than the plane just to be safe! Poor little thing, but she seems really happy... I'm more sad than she is that she can't run around and have fun xxx

When she has her fibre glass plaster on she will soon start walking! My daughter was trying to run around with it on and I had to keep telling her to slow down. Took about 2 weeks for her to start walking.
