Recommendations for anti histamine syrup

My adult daughter has learning difficulties and will only take anti histamine in liquid form but finds Piriton syrup unpalatable and the same with Piriteze. I was hoping someone could suggest a better tasting flavoured one. It can be from any UK shop or pharmacy.

Boots own is more like menthol, I think, and thinner less syrupy.

If it's for hayfever, the allergy expert Dr Sophie Farookh doesn't recommend Piriton.

You could try clarityn? They do a syrup

Look at Phenergen. It comes in orange flavour. Tesco sell tablets but not liquid. I order it via the local independent pharmacy.

Thanks everyone, should also have said a non drowsy one with a one a day dose. Blush

Watching with interest - in my ideal world there would be an unflavoured one as my child won’t take any flavoured medicine and is having a horrendous time with hay fever. But I think a sweetener is necessary because of the bitterness of antihistamine?

Clarityn (Loratadine) is mixed berry flavour (used to be peach and it was gross). I haven't tried it so can't review the flavour. Clarityn is also available as a 'melt' (RediTabs) which tastes of nothing but is really hard to get hold of in U.K.

Daftapath · 26/06/2022 14:57

Piriton isn't a once a day dose though. Wears off after a few hours

My daughter has children's Benadryl liquid and sure it's suitable for adults. It seems to taste okay, she hasn't said otherwise!

UnityO · 26/06/2022 19:35

DS is super fussy and cat even get tiny tablets down him but he will take the Benadryl allergy syrup. He says it smells revolting but tastes 'ok'.

vjg13 · 26/06/2022 19:58

Thanks everyone, a few to try now.Smile

Try and get her to take the tablet form

Its very small and not noticeable when swallowed with a drink or even with yogurt

My 7 and 9 year old can take a single anti histamine tablet and prefer that over the syrup

vjg13 · 26/06/2022 22:08

@Soubriquet She's an adult with severe learning difficulties. Believe it or not I may have tried once or twice!

Phenergan orange is great but is drowsy so may not suit - though the syrup is I think 5ml per spoonful and usual adult dose is 25mg, so you could try a lower dose? I vary between 10 and 40mg depending on how bad my allergies are (tablets, but on prescription). It's definitely the best tasting one I've had so far!

eatingasatsuma · 26/06/2022 22:31

There's a pharmacy own brand one which is strawberry flavour. I can't remember the brand name though which I know is useless, sorry.

vjg13 · 03/07/2022 11:45

Thanks to everyone that posted, the Clarityn syrup is berry flavoured with a 10ml a day dose and she seems to find it ok. Hope it continues because I bought 4 bottles!

That is brilliant news @vjg13
