Lozadkins · 24/06/2022 19:39

Hi my 8 montg old is meant to be spending the day with her cousins tomorro however 3 of them have come down with chickenpox. Should I still take her to get it over with or is it best to wait until she is older.

No I wouldnt expose them to CP on purpose. Getting it under age 1 gives a higher chance of childhood shingles or can lead to not getting full immunity.

It's not always mild either so I would avoid the cousins until the spots have scabbed over

RandomQuest · 24/06/2022 19:49

No. Swerve the cousins. Get her vaccinated at 1.

Don't choose illness for your baby.

SupposeItDoesnt · 24/06/2022 20:12

No don’t take her, get her vaccinated when she’s 12 months old

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/06/2022 20:21

No!!

Blabla81 · 24/06/2022 20:34

What everyone else has said. Avoid it and get vaccinated as soon as possible. Best thing we ever did for ours.

Lozadkins · 24/06/2022 20:37

They don't vaccinate for chicken pox anymore though only if they are high risk.

You can pay privately for the CP vaccine. Its never been given on the nhs

The vaccine is readily available at boots / Superdrug etc - you just have to pay for it - obviously hard if you can’t afford it but for us it was worth every penny - the main reason was I obviously didn’t want my dd to get ill if it could be prevented- but also I would have lost more money than it cost by having to miss work.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/06/2022 20:42

DD had chicken pox at 9 months. She was extremely unwell - far iller than her 3 yo brother who she caught it from. Temperature over 40o on and off for 4 days. If we’d been at home (we were visiting dm 250 miles away) I’d have take her to hospital.

Pythonesque · 24/06/2022 20:55

I agree with everyone above. The vaccine is becoming more available if you can afford it at 12 months plus. Even if you can't / aren't likely to afford it in the near future, I'd still try to swerve them getting chickenpox until older than 2 if you can. MIne were about 20 months and 4.5 when they had it, no later problems but the younger one has several permanent faint white scars.

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/06/2022 21:04

Even if you don't feel you want to pay for the vaccine, DC can be very unwell with c pox , why would you consider putting your little one in its path ?

Whoatealltheminieggs · 24/06/2022 21:07

Do not do this. Mine had it under one and then again bad when she was 8. If they don’t get a bad enough sleep dose as a baby they can get it again. My second also had it under one and it was horrid. She had it everywhere, blistered skull, private parts, in her mouth, scary high temperatures. I didn’t know there was a vaccine until then. I would definitely pay privately for a vaccine.

Read this thread from a few years ago and see why it's not a good idea

www.mumsnet.com/talk/childrens_health/1649084-DS-still-asleep-what-to-do

Strangely, that's the second time today I've posted that link.

TheRookie · 24/06/2022 21:30

My 4yo currently has CPox and is so poorly, fever, loads of spots and feeling terrible. I also have a 10 month old and am worrying myself sick for him to get it from her. It's bad enough her being so unwell, and she has some understanding of it as her friends have all had it at nursery, but to think of my poor baby getting it is awful when they have no idea. Don't put them through it, it's not worth it. Their time will come, there's no rush.

cptartapp · 24/06/2022 21:40

Ds2 caught CP at one week old. I was bf so he only caught it mildly. Now 17 and never had it again.
I wouldn't willingly expose a young child, no.

1dayatatime · 24/06/2022 21:43

If you are financially able to then please please get your DC vaccinated against chicken pox.

My DS was hospitalised with chicken pox at the age of two and I still feel the guilt now for not getting him vaccinated even though he made a full recovery and was only there for two days.

RandomMess · 24/06/2022 21:47

Please don't expose a non verbal child to c-pox DD ended up in hospital after 2 days they finally realised she also had a raging ear infection, she had been so unwell for days and spots absolutely everywhere and was given anti-virals.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 24/06/2022 22:29

@BoreOfWhabylon that thread is terrifying. Poor child

LilacPoppy · 24/06/2022 22:33

My baby was hospitalised with chicken pox. I can’t comprehend why you would deliberately expose. My other children were vaccinated after that. It’s a disgrace it’s not an nhs vaccine.
