6 week old - forceful vomiting

DD2 is 6 weeks old and her spitting up has been gradually getting worse - I assumed this was normal as they eat more, there's more to spit up? DD1 never spat up anything so I don't have anything to compare to.

Today though, we've had 2 instances of really quite forceful vomiting, soaking me both times. Once was this morning, and then again this evening. I'm not sure exactly what defines projectile vomiting, but this definitely came out with a degree of force.
Is this normal, does it need a GP? Or 111? I think she seems otherwise ok, maybe a bit sleepier than normal but it's hot, and she's so little that she doesn't really have a "normal" level of sleepiness, it changes every couple of days it seems.
She's exclusively breastfed if that's relevant.

Sounds like you.might be dealing with an allergy.keep a diary of what you are eating and see if you can pinpoint what she is reacting to. I would definitely get her in to see the doctor personally

It’s a GP request, sounds like reflux which as long as baby isn’t distressed and they are gaining weight most healthcare professionals don’t worry about. It’s a washing issue not a health issue is what a HV use to say.

Still see your GP, you might want some baby gaviscon or to rule out any allergies etc.

My bf son had this up to 16 times an hour. The doctor told me it was normal and if he kept gaining weight he’d be fine. She was right. It stopped around a year old. He had a blood test around then and they included a test to see if he’d ever had an allergic reaction and it was negative.

Sounds like reflux, it's projectile

Amichelle84 · 22/06/2022 20:22

I'd speak to the GP, if it's silent reflux then some infant gaviscon can do wonders. Although it looks a lot, the amount baby brings up isn't as much as you'd first think either.

Can it still be reflux if she doesn't have any of the discomfort symptoms eg arching back? She's generally fairly content, and she'll quite happily lie on her back throughout the day and overnight (even if her sleep isn't fantastic generally).

My daughter did the same. She was also breastfed, and would drench both of us. Happened once a day for a few months. Doctor wasn’t concerned as she was developing fine and didn’t have low weight. never given a diagnosis.

I could easily be wrong but I thought the only allergy that a breastfed baby could have through breast milk was cows' milk?
Not that I've ruled that out, I just didn't realise there were others that might potentially cause issues? DH has an anaphylactic allergy so it's something we were very aware of when weaning DD1, but I never considered any other allergens when breastfeeding.

I'd get it checked out by GP tomorrow. Its most likely reflux but she's at an age that they will want to rule out pyloric stenosis. Is her nappy output OK? My cousin and his boy both had it and they were both sick to the other side of the room.

MadameDragon · 22/06/2022 22:29

I was concerned about pyloric stenosis too and he had all the risk factors but they wouldn’t consider it without weight loss.

Any allergens can pass through breast milk, not just milk. It is the proteins that they are allergic to. It can also take up to two weeks to clear from your system (and therefore your milk) if you take it out of your diet.
