Toddler appears to run hot - anyone else?

Ok so basically I think my nearly 2 year olds normal temp seems to be 37.3/37.4. But often she can be 37.5 or 6 and then I sometimes get one off higher readings too. Using the Braun ear thermometer. Have been at the doctor with her multiple times who says she is fine, I suffer with health anxiety, but driving myself mad over this thinking that she is constantly on the verge of a low grade fever and that this might signify something more serious. I realise I should just put the thermometer away but worried I will miss something serious then 😭 She is otherwise fine although I think she may be teething at the moment also.

She cools right down at night but I guess I am just looking to see if anyone else has a toddler who can run hot? 🙈

Anything under 37.6 is entirely within normal range, and some people will sit naturally at the top of that range. My DS has always been like this. When he's actually ill his temperature can go above 41. Home thermometers aren't terribly accurate either. I always take it 3 times in a row and pick the middle reading. If your DD seems otherwise well I would step away from the thermometer!

Yes, my children tend to be on the warm side. It's a bit annoying with covid rules. 40+ is when I start to worry

Yodaisawally · 22/06/2022 17:13

Yep mine always have done

DS was consistently above 38 for the first 2 years of his life. He was prodded and poked to find the cause but never did find anything. Now he runs at about 37.5 which is slightly better, but was still a worry in covid times! When ill his temperature can go above 41.

@DinaC how is your DD now? My son constantly runs at 37.8 during the day but then drops to 36.8 at night and I too suffer with health anxiety.

Doctors aren't worried as he is happy but I'm worried that he constantly has an elevated temp during the day when he is active or even just reading.

DinaC · 14/04/2024 00:20

She is a very happy 3.5 year old now, absolutely grand and I have also managed to let the anxiety over her temp go also. I imagine she still runs hot but I don't check her temp any more unless she is actually unwell. That's just her normal temperature range. I now realise that some children just run warmer than others so I am sure your boy is just fine too :)

Thank you! I really hope that is the case with my son too! Hopefully I cam control my anxiety and out the thermometer down.

I have a hot child, when he is sick he is usually hitting 40/41. Early years were spent at A+E before realising that he just runs hotter than average.

Aklein38 · 14/04/2024 14:16

@BobShark does he run hot even without an illness? My son frequently hits 37.8/37.9 during the day and even higher after a bath or immediately after running but then it comes down at bedtime.

Mumoftwo2022 · 14/04/2024 22:57

Both of mine are “warm” kids normal temps of around 37.5 and when ill they go over 40+ even when its a minor illness. I’ve for used to it and I don’t worry about it anymore.

PuneorPlayonWords · 14/04/2024 23:18

Ds is 12. His baseline temp has always been 37.8 and up to 38 isn't unusual. He'd have a temp of 39 with a mild cold (sniffly nose) and I remember him having a temp of 40.2 when he was about 18 months old but happily playing peekaboo and laughing with dh while I was calling a paediatric nurse advice line at 2am! Hopefully your child is fine too.
