Chicken pox - start to finish

How long did chicken pox last for your children ( from the start of the first spot to when they had all scabbed over ). NHS says about 1-2 weeks .

When I spoke to my mum she told me it would definitely take longer than one week . When I looked it up on previous threads on mumsnet they definitely seem to take longer than a week. Our preschool says it’s a one week average usually for most kids .

We have a wedding end of the week . My DS isn’t sick , feeling great actually other than spots all over him . We are on day 3 at the moment.

In my experience (parent and nursery teacher) not all spots scab. I've seen spots in moist areas like arm pits and nappy area last for over a month, never scabbing but eventually disappearing. I believe NHS website will give you a clear timescale for being contagious.

Both mine were 2 weeks. They possibly fully scabbed before then but were still feeling pretty poorly. That was a fun month!!

JuneyJune · 20/06/2022 10:40

My daughter was very spotty (first spot appeared on a Friday) and really rough and poorly on the Sunday.

But the Thursday the following week she was fully scabbed and feeling well. But she certainly looked very poxy still.

Carlichimp · 20/06/2022 10:43

Mine was better and ready to go back to nursery by day 10. I wonder if preschool aged children maybe get better more quickly on average?

It’s impossible to guess whether your LO will be able to go to the wedding. I’d guess most likely they won’t - and you really can’t go until they’re all scabbed over, it would be terrible to pass it on to someone immunocompromised or pregnant.

Hope he gets well very soon!

My son aged 4 was about 5 days as he only had about 10 spots and some of them didn't even blister.

My daughter was 6 months old and had millions of spots, she was covered! Still, after a week they were all scabbed over except the ones in the nappy area which took longer to dry out. We resumed normal activities after 10 days.

YouBoggleMyMind · 20/06/2022 12:48

DS took about 8 days to scab over.

Thanks for the replies!

My DS’s spots are already scabbing over. The odd one is still popping up but I think we are getting to the end of it . He has a mild case. I’m hopeful by Saturday we should be fine . He only has two spots on his face so he won’t look too weird for the wedding 🙃

NHS do say 1-2 weeks but I don’t often hear of them healing in a week.

6 days, woke up on the Wednesday with spots, she returned to school the following Tuesday. I will say though DD pox was mild, she didn't spike any temperature and apart from being a bit lethargic on day 1 she was absolutely fine in herself.

YukoandHiro · 21/06/2022 22:33

10 days from first spots to all scabbed for both my children

Number109 · 23/06/2022 13:42

DD1 came home from school on a Monday with 3 spots on her shoulder, half her class were out on Tuesday and she went back the following Tuesday but was still very spotty. DD2 got it 2 Tuesdays later, loads more spots but smaller and scabbed over faster so she went back the following Monday.

sunflowerandivy · 23/06/2022 14:45

7 days until first spot until all scabbed over. Terrible terribly rash

noscoobydoodle · 23/06/2022 14:58

6 days for DS age 2.5 to be back at nursery. he didn't have too many spots except on his face and head and he wasn't itchy or poorly. They all scabbed over by day 5. Some of the stubborn scabs were still there a couple of weeks later. DD1 only took 4 days- only had a few spots that scabbed quickly- slight temperature one day but otherwise fine. DD2 took a couple of weeks- she was absolutely covered head to toe, the spots took ages to scan, and she was poorly, itchy and grouchy. Even once all the spots had scabbed she looked spotty for ages!

berksandbeyond · 23/06/2022 15:03

It was about 10 days all in. I don't think he'll be ok for the wedding this weekend

Yodaisawally · 23/06/2022 15:12

Got it on 21st December, both DTs had three weeks off school after Christmas holidays and a stay in hospital.

If anyone hasn't and you can, get them vaccinated. I had no idea it was an option .

Ridingthegravytrain · 23/06/2022 15:13

Both mine randomly got their first spots on a Wednesday and were back to school the following Tuesday.

Sh05 · 23/06/2022 15:21

Did is also day 3 of chicken pox today, she's overed in them with some very large ones on one side of her face. I'm hoping by Monday morning she'll be ok to go back to school but she still has a few new ones popping up so will wait and see.
Dd3 hasn't got them yet so I suppose just as one is clear the other Willbe housebound.
The only shame is that the weather's great

IwaswhoIam · 05/07/2022 09:46

update 😊

We were able to go to the wedding . They all scabbed over by the Wednesday but there were a few that needed to be a bit more scabby if you know what I mean . But by the Saturday they were all completely 100% no doubt scabbed over .

My second born just got them but he has them much worse and definitely won’t be healing so quickly . No plans this week at least 😅
