Bottled water vs boiled tap water

Chocpie · 15/06/2022 15:45

I'm weaning my 6 months old. Health visitor advised to give them boiled tap water as bottled water can contain high level of minerals but tbh I'm not trusting tap water. Any thoughts welcome x

What don't you trust tap water? The HV is correct.

dementedpixie · 15/06/2022 15:50

At 6 months you can give unboiled tap water as a drink. Bottled water can be too high in sodium so should be avoided

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/06/2022 15:52

HV 's advice is correct in the UK.

KarrotKake · 15/06/2022 15:52

Where do you live? If in the UK on mains water, tap water (unboiled) is fine for 6 months +.

JLQ1020 · 15/06/2022 15:55

Please listen to HV it's most definitely boiled, cooled tap water. Bottle water is too high in certain minerals that can be bad for babies.
Boiled and cooled water, and sterilisation for babies up to a year.

I live in the UK and a biologist friend told us the tap water wasn't good to consume

bottled water is too high in sodium. Boiling tap water gets rid of any nasties that may be in the water, then cooled down it's fine to drink

eurochick · 15/06/2022 15:58

Tap water is fine. You could Brita filter it if you wanted but there is no need. My tiny premmie got tap water once she was weaning.

NHS advice is that water given to children under 6 months should be boiled and cooled first, but tap water is fine for all infants over 6 months of age.

Bottled water is not recommended for babies or toddlers as it may contain too much salt or sulphate for them.

Your friend is talking bollocks. Tap water in the UK is safe.

Your health visitor is right. Bottled water is to high in some minerals for babies. Then there is the horrendous plastic waste that goes with it. Please don't give bottled water.

2bazookas · 15/06/2022 16:06

In UK, tap water is perfectly safe. Listen to your HV.

Once your baby is crawling/mobile, no need to boil his drinking water; he'll be licking sucking chewing and putting in his mouth, lots of far riskier microbes.
That's how he'll build up his immune system .

I never drink tap water, I’m not a fan.

Tap water boiled and then cooled down is certainly fine though. DD is 13 months and we’re so used to boiling the kettle to give her water that we’ve just continued doing it. Certainly go with that method:)

The advice you have linked to is for making infant formula.

Water as a drink doesn't have to be boiled after 6 months
