Exposure to Chicken Pox

Hi all,

My DS is almost six weeks old. Last night, he spent the day with my mum who has just rang me to say that one of the children she cares for at work has chicken pox. Obviously, she didn’t know this at the time and has only just found out. She said the child wasn’t coughing or sneezing and my mum was wearing gloves whilst handling the child and sanitised her hands after. She didn’t touch any red spots or blisters etc.

My mum has had chicken pox as a child, as have I. What is the likelihood of DS coming out in red spots?! Both me and my mum are worrying!

Thanks!

Was your dc around the dc at the time? Hopefully they’ll not get it if just contact with your mum. My dcs were exposed to chicken pox when babies but I was breastfeeding at the time so they didn’t catch it. Generally your milk adjusts itself to protect against viruses and its full of antibodies and other immune boosting properties. Obviously they could still catch it but hopefully they didn’t get direct exposure.

If your mum has had chicken pox before then I don't think she can be infected again. So there would be no way for your child to be infected. Your child would have to be in contact with am infected person himself.

I would consider getting the chicken pox vaccination when he is old enough. It's not on the NHS but if you. An afford it, it's worth doing.

Very doubtful third hand exposure will give your lo cp, especially as she had it before and your baby will still have antibodies from you,

DS didn’t have any direct contact with the child, no. Glad to hear it’s unlikely that he will catch it then - thanks everyone!

@Triptop I will definitely look into getting him vaccinated 😊

highly unlikely mum would pass it on. I would get him vaccinated though. My dd had it at 6 months and it was horrible
