What healthy snacks do you give your children?

I am really trying to get my children (6, 12) to eat better. It's something I have found particularly difficult as my older child has literally been the pickiest eater known to man. Only now that he's older have I began to see slight changes (which are massive to us) in terms of trying fruit etc but I still would like him to eat Healy when lunches in school. What snacks do you allow your kids ?

Oatcakes with cheese/peanut butter.
Red peppers, tomatoes, carrots, apples - all whole.
Sourdough bread with butter.
Cheese strings (not ideal but not the worst)
Small pot of plain yoghurt
A handful of almonds, cashews or walnuts.
Olives or gherkins.

My mother used to tell us to have a glass of milk, sadly both my DC, 11 and 9 hate milk.

My main aim is to avoid anything too sweet. DD loves salami but it is very unhealthy.

Thank you for replying 🙂 I find it so difficult to get them to eat stuff like this but I'm gonna really try. My other child (16) has always been a great vegetable/ salad eater and it was so effortlessly easy. I believe my 12 year old has v v mild autism and sensory issues although he's never been diagnosed

Capsicums/Peppers - very sweet and I've always given them to my daughter like apples. So she will just eat a whole one cut up or have it in a wrap. Pepper wrap is a go-to lunchbag item or snack.

You can also go online and look at ways to make a healthy version of unhealthy snacks like chocolate bars or fruit winders.

raw coconut balls type of recipe you would look for, make up a batch and leave out.

Mine loves pancakes which I say are healthy as they are mainly oats and bananas.

Make smoothies at home find a recipe they like then gradually add spinach / ground nuts and seeds etc.

Bagels with hummus

Cucumber sticks with hummus

Raspberries x Brazil nuts together (actually that's just me- taste so good!)

Raisins, dried apricots

Rice cakes with PNB

Brown sandwiches with PNB & jam

Grapes x blueberries cut up

Could make a little 'Snack Menu' for them to choose from.... 😁

I prefer giving my kids something readily available in kitchen for snacks. Store-bought packaged snacks are big no for me.

  1. My baby loves fruits. He eats 1 serving of Fruit snack every day. He eats almost all fruits without fuss.
  2. Dairy - Evening Snack is mostly Dairy based.
I offer him other items like dry fruits, crackers, Eggs as per his availability & his interest.
