Hi. Little man had uncontrolled vomiting followed by diarrhoea last Friday, so almost a week ago. Told to just have rehydration sachet on discharge from a and e, with a breastfeed after a few hours had passed. He hasn't been able to stomach any more than half a slice of toast or equivalent since without being sick, he's only been sick maybe 3 times since when we tried giving him more.,so he's just had nibbles. The doc said the diarrhoea may last a few days longer. Trouble is it's still really bad, it will be a week tomorrow. I read that they can become lactose intolerant after a gastro bug so got some lactase drops which haven't really helped, but they are for younger babies so maybe I'm not giving a big enough dose? He's in good form otherwise. He's getting so thin. We are on holiday at the moment and I don't know whether to try see a doctor tomorrow? Has anyone any advice, is this normal, a whole week later? Sorry forgot to say he's just over a year old. Thanks so much for reading

How old is he? Is he taking liquids?

Justhereforaibu1 · 02/06/2022 19:58

Hi thanks for reading. He's just over a year. Yes he's having breastfeeds and water

It just sounds like he has a d&v bug. It can take a while to clear up, if he's managing liquids fine I'd just hold out a bit longer. Very unlikely to have turned into a lactose intolerance. It'll clear up.

Thank you. I've never known a bug last this long, maybe we've just been lucky!

This happened to my two year old and it was Campylobacter. GP did a stool sample and then prescribed antibiotics. It took a couple of weeks until back to normal. No idea where it came from!

When he talking fluids I wouldn't worry about how much eating.
With child that young always go Dr if worried.
Hope he feeling better soon

Avoid all milk products and soya too for now.

Nat6999 · 02/06/2022 22:58

Keep on giving him fluids, plain water isn't best when they have a bug, there isn't anything for the body to absorb for energy & water can bounce straight back up, try weak non sugar free juice, have you got any rusks or anything dry with added vitamins, maybe cereal without milk? My doctor told me that as long as there is something going in at the top then some of it will stick, have you thought of plain mashed potato or pasta without sauce,?

How is he today, Op?

Justhereforaibu1 · 03/06/2022 09:46

Thank you everyone. He's having about half a slice of toast a day, a couple of rice cakes and breast milk. I gave him plain pasta last night (before I saw your reply so don't blame yourself!) and he was violently sick after it. Has had explosive diarrhoea twice today already.

DD was like this with rotavirus, it lasted about two weeks in the end. Sounds like you are doing all the right things - it feels endless though at the time. If he isn't better by the time you're home, best to see a GP. In the meantime if he seems dehydrated take him to a&e.

Don't bother with food if he's breastfeeding, that's 100 percent the only thing he needs right now. Your body will be making antibodies to help him fight the illness.
