Nose bleeds

Does anyone have any experience of when we should see a gp about nose bleeds? Is there a point where you say this isn't normal? Like if they have 3 in a week or 10 a month etc? I have never had a nose bleed but have a child who has always been prone but this week it's been awful. We have been saying it's probably the weather etc but I don't know when you are meant to seek further advice. Thanks

Yes my ds suffered badly growing up. Sometimes I'd be called in school to collect him as they were so bad. I was told by the gp he'd grow out of it but in the meantime they referred him to have it cauterized (sorry if I misspelt that) he still got them but not as bad and as gp said he started to grow out of it after a while.

I'd ask your GP, OP. Likely to be nothing to worry about but worth seeing if screening to rule out clotting disorders is indicated.

Mine gets them badly on occasion, especially night bleeds.
We got referred to ENT, he prescribed a cream to be applied for a week and we just continue getting that cream when there is a nosebleeding spell.
We were told cauterising is an option too, but I’m reluctant as it’s done under general anaesthetic.

This was pretty much me as a child. DM took me to A&E when I was about 7 and had had an all day nosebleed that had made me miss school. I used to get them at least once or twice a week.

I’m now in my 50s.I still get them about once a month. They are triggered by long tunnels, high altitude, hot weather, cold weather!, and the will of the pixies I think. I don’t think they are hormonal. Interestingly though, when DS bowled a cricket ball at speed that landed square on my nose - nothing!

We have this with DS1. We went to the GP when he went through a phase of getting a couple a day. They weren't that interested tbh and sent us away with a cream. They tend to happen during the spring, we have had success with a kids antihistamine / hay-fever medicine.

beechhues · 02/06/2022 13:23

Dd had this and grew out of it - prescribed naseptin, GP said sometimes infection could trigger them. Dried out nose can be a factor so saline spray was recommended to keep it all moist.

So scary eh?
They used to come on so suddenly and severely and then they just stopped about a year ago.

DS had nosebleeds, mainly in the hay fever season so about now, he did seem to grow out of it and it was mainly between the ages of about 10-16, I always used to worry about it because it was in exam season. I have nosebleeds sometimes and so did DM so not sure if it might have been hereditary. We did mention it to the GP about DS and he said it was likely caused by the hay fever

Ok it sounds like it's common and I could be correct that it's the weather. She is 12 so I'm hoping may grow out of it soon. She said she was feeling light headed with it yesterday

My ds got 2 or 3 a week the whole time he was 10, now 11 and now only occasionally. He's been through the forst bit of puberty now so I always thought it might be related.

anothernamedoesntsmellsosweet · 02/06/2022 21:12

She has hit puberty but as she has been on growth hormones her height etc is heavily monitored so we know she is almost finished growing so I don't know whether her growth or development will still affect it? I don't know, grasping at straws to explain it really as I don't want to go to the gp if it's not really necessary as we go way too often!!

7Worfs · 17/03/2023 09:27

@Fai2915 I’d go to the GP again. Upthread someone recommended saline spray to avoid nostrils drying out too much.

Fai2915 · 17/03/2023 10:56

Thanks will go again booked in next week so fingers crossed
