My toddler has stopped saying daddy

My son is 2.5 years old. He can say probably 100 words and some short sentences and can also name every colour of the rainbow. However he has recently stopped saying daddy and now just refers to his dad as Da we try to sing the word daddy in songs but he will not say it back. Should I be concerned about this?

Is this the only word that's changed? If he's still using his typical range of words and not dropping endings on any other words I wouldn't be worried myself. My 3 year old went through a phase of playing with our names and calling me mum rather than mummy for a while.

This and a couple of other words he used to say like his sisters name that he won't say anymore. We are trying to be relaxed with him about it but I guess as a mom I'm just a bit worried. Thank you 😊

Are you worried about her speech or relationship?

Either way it's fine, my toddler has special words she chooses to mispronounce (she can do it right), and will sometimes call us by our first names. She will presumably grow out of both.

Just the speech as he used to consistently say daddy but now won't say daddy at all just "da" so was unsure if I should be concerned or it's just a normal thing toddlers do. Xx

Does his sister use 'Dad' or 'Daddy'?

ChateauMargaux · 29/05/2022 14:28

My son did somethig similar. He used to say Momma Dadda Mooma Dadda and we used to encourage him to say his sister's and brother's name.. he use to say 'Bob' and 'Barbie' instead.. and laugh!! He also shortened lots of words..

They have different fathers so I guess he doesn't hear the word daddy at all really as she calls him by his first name which is dan.

Ahh thank you that's reassuring. I'm probably just worrying over nothing. I have 13 year gap between my two so I feel like a first time mom again

Well, surely that explains it.
If your DD calls him Dan, then why shouldn't your DS?

Do you refer to your other half as Dan or Daddy in his hearing? I'd try to have a blitz on referring to Daddy to break him back in.

singingbirds · 29/05/2022 14:36

@TeenPlusCat yes this is what I'm thinking probably very confusing for him if we are referring to him as dan and DS as daddy. Will try and see if this helps. Thank you 😊

@MiddleParking wasn't my intention to drip feed at all.

"Dan" is your answer. My 2 year old has three words, he only ever has three words, as soon as he learns a new word an old word falls away. He is undergoing investigations because he gains a word/loses a word.

That was my concern as he has stopped saying a few things which are words he hears daily too. Will just keep an eye on his speech and hopefully he will pick up his sisters name and daddy again. Sending lots of luck you get some answers for your little one too xxx

Hopefully this link works! It is a speech therapist on Instagram called Raising Little Talkers with a post about when children stop saying words and the reasons for it.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 29/05/2022 14:54

Do you think shes trying to say Dan rather than daddy? If she's hearing her sisyer say Dan then shes probably copying.

cottagegardenflower · 29/05/2022 16:24

He's saying Dan lol

He ain't saying dan he is saying "da" if he was saying dan I wouldn't be worried at all it's the fact he has gone from saying daddy to "da" he never says dan.

I'm hoping this is the case but he doesn't say Dan just "Da" which is why I was concerned xx

I think you may have it there.

When dd1 was a similar age we were having the kitchen done, and I abandoned dh and took her up to stay with my parents. She came back from that trip having gone calling me "mummy" and my mum "granny", to calling me by my first name and my mum "Mum". That was just her imitating what she was hearing.

If your ds hears "daddy" called "Dan" then I'd guess he's just imitating that.

Just keep saying things like "pass it to daddy" and he'll probably go back to that at some point.

MargaretThursday · 29/05/2022 20:56

Sorry, I meant to say that "Da" starts both "daddy" and "Dan" so they're just combining the two.

Musomama1 · 29/05/2022 21:01

My son has started to just shout my DH's real name. Much like me 🙈
